What often gets overlooked is the devastation caused to the wildlife. After the recent fire near my place there were newspaper reports of Koala Bear losses and photos of Koala survivors with burnt ears, noses, and paws.

A particularly bad fire near my place about ten years ago came right up to the fence line and you could see all the tree hollows containing nests of various descriptions starting to smoke as embers set the nesting material alight. You couldn’t do a thing about it as they were all high up.

One particular hollow tree trunk close by caught fire, we couldn’t put it out and eventually the whole thing fell over. A few days later I could smell something dead in the area and a couple of weeks after that I found a Possum’s skull. The poor little blighter had died in the tree hollow without making a sound or any attempt to escape.

Hi Ina, Joette and Currie,

Ina, you are ahead of me , when it comes to Earthquakes. For a number of years I had one of those emergency packs for earthquakes in my car.
I don't have any anymore.

You are so right about the rain causing mud slides. It won't even take much rain to cause them.
What a quandary Southern California is in. We need rain, but we don't want houses to come tumbling down the hills.
All California thanks you for your prayers, Joette, even emoticon ones. :D
A lot of trees were burned down, and it will take many years for them to grow back.
The wildlife has suffered greatly as they always do during these fires. It could be dangerous for people too, if cougars come into residential areas looking for food. They have done so in the past.

Most of the fires are now contained, although still burning. I read somewhere that they hoped to have them out by Nov. 5.

Some of the evacuees had time to grab some things as they left their houses, others were not so lucky. One couple, on TV, said that they didn't even have time to put on any shoes. They grabbed the car keys and ran for it. Their house was burning as they left it.

What I would like to get, is a small trunk that is fireproof, waterproof, etc. to put all my photos and important papers in. The chances of something bad happening are probably slim, but you never know when you might not have any time to grab anything.

Cheers
Sheila

Hi Sheila,

I'm just catching up with everything on TS. Those fires and reports have been very frightening to look at on television. Here's hoping that they will continue to contain the fires and keep you all safe and sound.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in California.

Regards,
Anne H
