Hi Linda,
Welcome to
Information is always welcome.

Thrall will be thrilled to get any addtional clues on his Charles Mclean.

I´m afraid that the only DC likely after this information so kindly offered by Killearnan is Charles Mclane plasterer d.1896
Linda, I sent for the DC for the above Charles and his relationship couldn't be confirmed, because there are no parents names recorded
The Massachusetts archives is the keeper of vital records for 1841-1915 and the cost of a certified certificate is $3 (what a bargin) but you're listing the address for Massachusetts Vital Records, which is a different research facility. MVR holds all BMD from 1916-present day and the cost is approx $11 for a certified copy.

Hi Marilyn; I thank you for the continuing interest, though results seem to be less than all the effort deserves!
I will have a shufty at the MAS marriage indexes at the weekend, one never knows................
Linda - welcome to TS and thank you too; I´m fairly convinced that Mary Jane Mclean is not one of mine as I have, I think, the names of all the bairns of both Charles and James McLean who were probably, but not certainly brothers as they were registered as one family with complementary spouses on arrival in US.
Trying to go either forward or back seems to be the problem at present, a bit like spinning endlessly in one of the drifts outside the house at present.........but at least I may get out on skis at the weekend and then one definitely does go forwards........

Hi Thrall,
Ah you're welcome, but I'm rather disappointed that Charles remains hidden under a rock somewhere. Its a difficult pill to swallow when you're not able to find someone.
Regards
Marilyn
P.S. The twins are not yours Thall, I remember looking them up and their parents were born in Paris, France.

Hi Marilyn, your "plan b" from a few months back has pulled an ace, as Ruth Turner of RAGK searched for me this week in the New Hampshire records and found the DC for James Mclean, with his parents' names so now I have some more to go on, assuming of course that the "difficult" Charles and now James were brothers.
They were classed together on arrival in US with their new brides as "family group" and they married together and had an age difference of only a couple of years, but no proof yet.
Anyway thank you again for all the help and support,
Guid hunting,
Thrall

Hi Thrall,
Three Cheers for Ruth Turner!
So many questions, can you post the details from James Mclean's DC? I'm really curious as to where he passed away in New Hampshire? Perhaps a local library might have him listed in their tax records?
I was happy to help, but its sounds like we're not finished yet.
Regards
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn, the DC that Ruth so kindly found is:
James Mc Lean d. Meredith, NH 26 April 1871
Age 58 Married Tailor b. Scotland
Father: James R. McLean b Scotland
Mother: Mary P. McLean b. Scotland
Spouse: not mentioned.
James´ second daughter was Mary P. McLean so it fits.
I have found a family in Cambeltown, Argyll that suits fairly well, though Charles and James reduced their ages slightly on arrival in US and their occupations in the 1841 census are not correct as far as I can see, but I´ll have to delve deeper when time permits. Perhaps not being able to use their skills pushed them to emigrate.
It is a step backwards, though, in a positive way.
I see that James owned 1870 $1000 in real estate and $200 in personal estate, so he seems to have done quite well.
