Last seen New York 1903

Post by PaulaD » Wed Nov 07, 2007 7:02 pm

Hi All,

I'm trying to find my Grandmothers sister. Bathia Ann Cassnie Gibb born 1871 Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
Found her on the Ellis Island records arriving New York 09 Nov 1903 on SS Columbia. She was visiting a female friend at E 26th St, New York City.
Now my problem is that I don't know if she stayed in the US or married or even came back home.
Can't find her death on SP and searched the US census during my 3 day Ancestry freebie but no obvious sign of her. This is my first attempt at finding someone across the pond and I'm totally stumped :?
Bright ideas anyone ?

Hi Paula,
Might she have married in the U.S? I assume you saw this one-- the middle initials are suggestive.

Milford, Worcester County, Massachusetts
Ray, Andrew, head, 52, first marriage, married 3 years, born Ireland, came to U.S. in [illegible], tea merchant
___ Bethia A.C., wife, 39, first marriage, marreid 3 years, born Scotland came to U.S. in [illegible],
___Margaret B, daughter, 9?/12, born Massachusetts

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Don't know how I missed that one
Certainly looks like her and if it is she appears to be there in the 1920 & 1930 census in Suffolk, Mass.
Will have to try and fiddle another 3 day freebie :D

Thanks for your help,

Paula

This might well be the the daughter Margaret's birth record:
Vol: 584 ; Page: 364 rec. Jan 1910
Milford, MA
12 June 1909
Margaret Bathiah Ray
father Andrew tea merchant b. Ireland
mother Bathiah A. C. Gibb b. Scotland
res. Milford

The on-line records only go to 1910, so no chance on Earnest's birth.

Looked for but didn't find Andrew and Bathiah's marriage. So it's likely they were married somewhere other than MA.

Hi Paula,

I may be taking a trip up to Boston this Saturday to pick up my cousin from the airport? It all depends on if he can find someone closer to drive him home? I'll know this Friday. The Massachusetts Archives are under renovation and they're only open certain Saturday's of the month, so I'll need to check that too. But if all goes well, I'll add these folks to my list of lookups.

Killearnan is right that the on-line records only go up to 1910, but the in house indexes go up until 1915, so Earnest's birth should be there?

Vital Records Index for Birth & Death on-line
and the Marriages will follow sometime early next year.

Hi All,

I now know (thanks to Sarah :D ) that Bathia died in her 95th year in 1966 so I will try to find an obit in local newspapers.
Marilyn - if you have time, that would be fantastic!
BJ - thanks for Margarets birth.

With all this new information there is good chance I might find some living rellies. I come from a rapidly dwindling family as my grandparents generation only had 4 children between 11 of them. (I had a lot of maiden aunts  )
Once again thanks for all your help - I'm a very happy bunny :D

Hi Paula,

I finally made it to the Massachusetts Archives today!

The good news is I was able to confirm the births of Margaret and Ernest.
The bad news is that I couldn't find a marriage for Andrew & Bathia? I'm
wondering if Bathia met Andrew in New York and they married there and
later moved to Massachusetts?

Birth Register in the Town of Milford

Margaret Bathia Ray b. 12 June 1909 Milford Massachusetts
f. Andrew Occupation of Father, Tea Merchant, born Ireland
m. Bathia A. C. Gibb, born Scotland

Ernest Andrew Ray b. 12 April 1912 Milford Massachusetts
f. Andrew Occupation of Father, Tea Merchant, born Ireland
m. Bathia A.C. Gibb born Scotland

Index to Marriage In Massachusetts

1901-1905

No listing for Andrew Ray
No listing for Bathia Gib, Gibb or Gibbs

1906-1910

No listing for Andrew Ray
No listing for Bathia Gib, Gibb or Gibbs

** Gibbs Bertha C. Bourne, Massachusetts 1907 vol 573 page 3 ??

1911-1915

**Andrew Ray Everett, Massachusetts 1911 vol 603 page 453- Film out for repair
No Listing for Bathia Gib, Gibb or Gibbs.

Regards
Marilyn

P.S. Paula send me your e-mail address in a pm and I'll scan the records to you, for some reason I'm having problems uploading a document to the gallery?
