Jeanie Mclaren
Wondering if anyone can help me .My aunt Jeanie Mclaren born Cadder 23 july 1904 went to America .The only info i have was what my mum told me and that wasnt very much.My mum was born Kilsyth 1917 and remembered waving her of in a ship when she was a little girl.Im guessing she went before 1929 as this was when her father died and they tried to contact her through the salvation army.I know she married in America and done well for herself but she died young .Her brother James also went to America we have pictures of him on a trip home about 1947 .I know its a hard one as i dont know who Jeanie maried but i know she had a son .I have tried ancesty withought any luck.Marguerite

Hi Marguerite
The dates you give take any search perilously close to the cut-off dates we have here on TalkingScot as they may relate to people who are still living (like my mother - born in 1912 who is still very much alive and kicking). We prefer to use the scotlandspeople dates of Births up to 1906, Marriages up to 1936 and Deaths right up to 1956.
There are places you can search yourself though. Mostly sites that deal in Immigration and Ship's passenger lists and there are some very good links here:
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3510
It can be a painstaking search when you don't know exact dates and there were loads of immigrant landings in America.
Remember too, that some ships off-loaded passengers in Canadian ports before travelling on to land their American quota of passengers at Ellis Island. Don't rule out that route.
I wish you luck with your search though

Hi Marguerite,
I have a number of questions for you
If you can answer any of them it might just give us the information needed to find her-- can't tell what might be important!
When you searched Ancestry, did you find any possible records of Jeannie on the passenger lists? If so, it might give us an idea where she was headed. You said also that she died young-- any idea what year that might have been? Also, do you know her brother's date and place of birth? It might help if we could find where he went, also. Any idea when he died?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi again,
Did Jeannie have an older sister or cousin Elizabeth? I assume you saw these two in in 1930, on Ancestry.com. They are working for the Harris family, who "left on vacation without filling out the form and were due back April 25th..." This was written in where their birth information should be!
1930
84 Summit Ave, Bronxville, Westchester County, New York
Harris, Isaac F, Head
Harris, ____, Wife
Harris, Elizabeth, Daughter
Harris, Helen, Daughter
McLaren, Elizabeth, Cook, 28, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1927, working for private family
McLaren, Jean, Waitress, 25, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1927, working for private family
Regards,
Sarah

There is a James McLaren, also in Westchester County, who also came over in 1927. He has a wife and two children, all born in Scotland. Could this possibly be your James, or was he younger than Jeannie?
1930
229 Main Street, Eastchester, Westchester County, New York
McLaren, James, Head, 28, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1927. House Painter
---- Isabella, Wife, 27, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1928
----Name removed of possibly living person, Daughter, 5, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1928
----Name removed of possibly living person, Son, 4 1/2, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1928
Regards,
Sarah
Later: I think they are not yours, since the passenger list is easily found and they are from Aberdeen...

Hi Marguerite:
Searching on http://www.ellisisland.org/
A very close call on the 1906 cut off on Jeanie, as Russell pointed out, so keeping clear of her, have a look at these records.
SS Cameronia - Passengers sailing from Glasgow, 13 April 1923 to New York
James McLearen, 42, Engineer-turner, (born Johnstone, Scotland) Johnstone, Scotland (next of Kin - wife- Mrs. Catherine McLearen, 14 John Lang St., Johnstone, Scotland)
Destination: Cousin - Catherine Wood, 55 9th Ave., Astoria, Long Island,
New York
Then, there is:
Catherine McLaren, 43, Housewife, Johnstone, Scotland (next of Kin - brother James Hosie, 8 Mary St., Johnstone) sails on S.S. Columbia, from Glasgow, with 4 children on 20th September 1923
Destination: Husband - James McLaren 55-9th Ave., Astoria, Long Island, New York
All the best,
Frances

When you were looking at the passenger lists, did you try looking for James in 1947? Or maybe it was the US immigration records where I found an uncle in the late 1940s/early 1950s.......I just remember finding him with his wife and a child or two, so I know it was post-WW2 (as he met his wife in France at the end of the war).
If you can find him, that might lead to a direction for checking the 1920 & 1930 census returns, or for finding an obituary for him that lists his sister Jeannie's son.

Here are three possible entries in the Social Security Death Index. If you look up his birth cert on Scotland's People (link at the top of this page) you can tell if one of these is the correct man by the birth date. Have you tried yet to look up birth certificates for this family?m morgan wrote:I think James died in the late 1960s or early 70s.
