Canadian records people disembarking in Montreal

Post by speleobat2 » Sat Dec 22, 2007 12:41 am

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know if Canada kept records of the passengers disembarking in Montreal? I know one of my great aunts did this at least twice after the family moved to Detroit. The ocean-going ships couldn't sail to Detroit then so I'm guessing she probably took the train for the rest of her trip, but was any kind of record kept or did people just walk down the gangway and off into the sunset as they pleased?

Also, can the passenger manifests be searched for by ship's name? If you know the ship's name and the year, can Ancestry or any of the other sites be searched that way to get the complete manifest?

Hi Carol,
Yes, do a google for Canadian Border Crossings and you'll find a wealth of information. xmas:wink:

Canadian Border Crossing Records Added to Ancestry.ca.

They cover 1895-1954 and are indexed

Hi Marilyn,

I knew about the ancestry border crossings, but the googling sure came up with a lot of stuff! This website http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/index.shtml might be of interest to anyone looking for relatives in Canada. It is very full of material and the top part is ads so be patient and scroll down!

I found one of the border crossing for my great aunt Mary, but that was on Ancestry. What I was hoping for was something that showed her landing in Quebec such as the passenger list from Scotland to Canada, but I didn't turn up anything. I'll go back and do some more reading later!

Hi Carol:

There are some very helpful immigration sites in our board at http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10349 which provides URLs for the Americas.

Especially the sections:
  • Immigration – Canada
Immigration - Canada – United States Border Crossings
There are references to Montreal arrivals, but you'd have to check for dates you need.

There are several ways/times that these records are available, but not are all online.

Have a look and see what may be available, and if nothing is useful, perhaps I can search out something at this end.

Frances

Thanks Lesley and Frances!

There's enough there to keep me busy while I'm waiting for Santa!
