Logan birth

Post by Morag » Wed Mar 05, 2008 7:36 pm

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to locate a birth certificate from 1896 in Pennsylvania ? If such a thing exists does it give information about parents ? I suspect that the child was illegitimate . The mother seems to have travelled back to Scotland several times - so must have had some money. She gave the child her step-mother's maiden name - but I am not sure if this was a way to tell porky's about her marital status - or of course it could have been a coincidence !
The mother was Janet Nicol who was born in Larbert . She disappeared after the 1881 census , was back in Larbert as a witness at her sister's wedding in 1907. I have found the manifest for her going to Washington in 1908 - and it states that she was previously in USA in 1895 and 1905.That is where I found when and where her son Daniel was born. She is still there in 1910 living in Washington, District of Columbia- but I can't find her after that.
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi Morag,
Whether or not you can find the birth record depends on what county the child was born in. Do you know where they were? The parents' names should certainly be listed if the child was registered-- at least the mother.

Sarah

Hi Morag,
Hmmm. That's more difficult then, if you only know the state and not the county :-k I'm afraid that would mean searching in every county in Pennsylvania  but could be done at the State Archives, I suppose. Will ponder on this and in the meantime someone else may have a better answer.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi again,
In 1920 Daniel Nicol Logan has "Phila" crossed out and then Pennsylvania written for his birthplace. That looks like he was born in Philadelphia, which narrows things down quite a bit!

Later: Okay, now we're getting somewhere... His WWI Draft Reg says he was born in Philadelphia on Feb 5 1896. With that information, surely you can get the cert :D

[cheers]
Sarah

Here's the web address for the Philadelphia City Archives, where it looks like you can order the cert:

Hello Morag,

The Washington Post, November 28, 1978, has an Obit for a Daniel Nicol Logan, age 81. There’s also a death notice for his wife on December 31, 1986.

There are death and funeral notices for a Janet Nicol Logan, the mother of a Daniel N. Logan in the Washington Post, October 4/5, 1955. No age is given.

This Daniel Logan had a rather distinguished career as a Naval Officer etc, he seems to have had some sort of a Scottish connection. There’s a small, not very clear, photograph as well.

Probably the people you’re after. If you can’t access these I could post the text in a PM but would be a lot easier to send page images by email if that’s okay.

Alan

Hi Alan,
Yes, that's the correct person. I found the death in the Social Security Death Index and the birthdate is exactly the same as on the WWI Draft card. Morag will be pleased! :D

Regards,
Sarah

P.S. And it took your mind off the word "chek" for a few minutes, didn't it

Hi Alan & Sarah

I just wanted to thank you both for all your help. I received lots of information from both of you - and was especially pleased with a photo !
I have emailed the contact in Philadelphia , and so will hopefully be able to acess the birth certificate soon.

Thanks again

Morag
