My ancestors emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to New Jersey, America in 1880 and lived there until they appeared back in Glasgow in the 1891 Census.
Does anyone know how to search on Ancestry (or anwhere else) for their return journey to Glasgow. Through help on Talking Scot, which I've appreciated very much, I've found them arriving in America, but don't know where to look for them returning to Glasgow.

Hi Alien:
Born in Scotland, there would be no need for their return be recorded anywhere other than a passenger list, unless of course they were returning with children who had been born in America.
The most likely source of information would be a passengerlist, which would require an educated guess as to which ports were involved and a time frame.
There are passengerlists available on Ancestry http://userdb.rootsweb.ancestry.com/passenger/
and several others:
www.cyndislist.com/ships.htm
www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/index.htm
www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships

Thanks Frances,
I'll have a look at what you suggest and see if I can find them. I thought it was strange that I'd never come across passanger lists for ships leaving America for Scotland, only the other way around.
I presume my grandmother must have had a passport issued in America since she was born there. I've taken out a one year subscription for Ancestry but frequently feel frustrated with myself because apart from the censuses, historical records and family trees, I'm not experienced at what I can look up or where to find it.
I really appreciate your reply, many thanks.
