California Fires

I hope none of the T.S members from California are being affected by the fires.
They look pretty awful on television.
Hope they get them under control soon

Hi Wini,

There are no fires burning here in the California desert where I live. Sheila lives in San Diego, and I don't think there are any fires there at the moment (although she went through a time of it last year with fires). Not sure where our other members live.

I'm praying that they can contain at least some of the fires burning in Calilfornia. It is devastating to see all of the homes being destroyed. Santa Barbara looks pretty bad right now. The Governor has called for the National Guards to be trained in firefighting.

Regards,

Ina

Hi Wini & Ina

I am very grateful that there are no fires in my area at the moment. I had quite a scare last fall with the fires that we had then. These awful fires are in the Santa Barbara area. I live in San Clemente which is at the border of San Diego County.

Regards
Sheila

Thanks Wini

I think that we have to think of it as the price we pay for living in California. We haven't had as much rain as is usual in the rainy season during the last couple of years. Last year was really bad here in Southern Calif.

My son says that up where he works, near Sacramento, the air is filled with smoke and it feels like the end of the world... (but he IS prone to exaggeration  ) Still, sounds horrible :(

Hi Sarah,

I don't think he is exaggerating this time. I have friends up there and they say it is horrible.

I think Sheila can confirm how bad it was in San Diego last year. I live over the mountain and a 2 hour drive from San Diego and we could smell the smoke here in the desert last year.

I just hope they are able to contain some of these fires soon.

Regards,

Ina

Last summer when we drove from Idaho to Minnesota, a major part of Montana was on fire-- it was a nightmare. We drove for two days in thick smoke before we finally got through it. I can't even imagine how awful it would be to be stuck in the middle for weeks at a time. Must be very hard on people with respiratory problems.

We had camping reservations at a Santa Clara county park (Uvas Canyon) and had to change them to a different park when the Summit fire, which started in Santa Cruz county, moved over the county line and right down Uvas Canyon. But that was with the first bunch of fires up here in Northern California, not the recent ones which are mostly further south.

Recently we've had a few days of strange gray skies and one evening when everything turned yellow at sunset, but not much smoke smell.

A couple of times we've had a layer of fine white ash on everything in the morning. My car still is still speckled.

We have reservations for camping in Alameda county (Chabot) this Friday, so I'm checking the fire reports frequently. :)

Ina is right. Even if your place isn't in immediate danger, the smoke from fires is awful. I remember last year how bad it was. I had to keep the windows closed because the smoke was so bad. It took several days to clear out, and I was lucky because I live only a mile from the beach and always get a good breeze from the ocean. I really feel for the people in central California.
