William Rodger & James Rodger in Canada

Post by darylrodger » Sun Jul 06, 2008 6:28 pm

Hi,

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction in how to locate a couple of relatives on my hubby's side of the family.

They're names are;

William Rodger
b. 29th Apr 1875, Hutchesontown, Glasgow
widower, possibly married again.
He probably emigrated after 1902.

James Rodger
b. 1st Dec 1914, Hutchesontown, Glasgow
Not sure when he emigrated or where to.

Are there any sites that I can look at to find their details etc ?

Regards,

Daryl

Hello Daryl

www.findmypast.com i think would be your best bet for finding them emigrating.

And for further research there are a lot of helpful links on here

Good luck

Hi Daryl:

Unfortunately, not very many Canadian entry records are available for searching online. 1925-1935 are searchable, but I didn't find anyone fitting the age at entry for either William or James.

There wouldn't be a record of citizenship because they would have been British subjects, so they would not have had to go that route.

The census is of help if you know the geographic location, but even then, it can be a very tedious search, town by town, then alphabetic surname.

The Library and Archives Canada has them all on microfilm but that is of little use outside the country. They are working at updating and indexing continually.

There may be something helpful at http://www.theshipslist.com/ If you can establish a more solid date of departure, then locating them on this side might be made easier.

Hi,

I found some new info regarding William. Apparently he sailed from Glasgow on the 1st Aug 1914, to Montreal, Canada with his wife.

How long did it usually take for a ship to reach it's destination ?

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Again,

I forgot to mention the ship that William sailed in was the Hesperian which was owned by the Allen Line.

Hello Daryl

Until someone comes along who does know....
Do you have the manifest ? sometimes the length of voyage is written on the top part of it.

Hi,

I had a look at the manifest for the voyage but it doesn't state how long the sailing would take. Very frustrating!

Hi,
I see that Frances (paddyscar) has found the manifest at the Library and Archives of Canada site. At least I assume that's what she was looking for when she got sidetracked and posted this topic: :D

Taking a peek, I see that the Hesperian left Glasgow August 1, 1914 and arrived in Quebec August 10.

Cheers,
Sarah

I admit, I've rather become a bit confused with several queries about Daryl's Roger family members and the Hesperian. The list of all the arrivals of the Hesperian from 1908 onward total 86, with 5 listing Scotland as the point of departure and Montreal as the destination in 1914. There are additional arrivals in 1914, listing ports outside Scotland.

I thought you'd found them! The ship is the first one in the list that you provided on the other thread  Now I'm getting confused too  (not that difficult...)
