New York City Death 1870-1880

Post by grannysrock » Wed Oct 29, 2008 11:13 pm

Would any of you good folks know what info I might find on a death cert issued sometime between 1870 and 1880 in New York, possibly Manhattan ( I think his address was 16th street ) ?

For example , would it state parent's names or exact place of birth ( ie not just "Scotland" ) ?

Also what would be the most cost effective way of obtaining such a document ? ( I am unlikely to be able to visit New York myself - although I may try my broom out on Friday :) ).

All advice gratefully received

Sally

Hi Sally,
This is the closest I can come to finding an answer, since I don't have any New York certs of that time in my own files.

Manhattan and Brooklyn deaths prior to 1866 were recorded in ledger book format; the following information was recorded: date of death, decedent's name, age, residence and nativity; cause of death, burial place and name of medical attendant.

I would suppose that the "nativity" could either just say "Scotland" or give more specific information as known to the informant. So no promises there. And it doesn't look as if the parents' names would be on it either :( Unless that was instituted in the 1870's.

Maybe someone will come along who has a cert from that time and place, who could tell you exactly.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Granny,

Sorry but I don't have any experience with New York research. Here's a link to the New York State Archvies where you can do a free search for your kin.

http://www.statearchives.us/new-york.htm

For a record that old you may get away with a copy for $1 US or so  Hopefully they won't make you pay for a certified copy. Most Archives, at least the ones I have experience with, will take your request and send you a copy for the same fee to cover the postage and paper.

Good Luck

Thanks Sarah !

Still burial place might be useful info at least - if there is a headstone with lots of info on it ! ( u never know) .

I should have mentioned the name of the person I'm interested in of course, in case it rings bells He is Malcolm M(a)cGregor , a distiller who seemingly died between census 1870 and 1880 . I have 1850,1860 & 1870 census for him and some descendants info & a couple of directory entries & bits & bobs.
Would really like to know if he is the same person as Malcolm McGregor , the son of Malcolm McGregor & Jean Carmichael of "House of Burn", Monzievaird who emigrated to New York in 1817 . ( have that record)

.. Because according to the NY times he had a very interesting ancestor ! So I might have too !
