Rhode Island Help

Post by annie1 » Sun Nov 02, 2008 1:31 pm

Hi All,

I have just found a Gt Aunt in the passenger lists on Ancestry :D then I managed to find her in the 1920 and 1930 census in Bristol, Rhode Island, I searched for a death, but no luck, so I googled her name and found a burial for someone with the same names but a new surname, she could have re-married, I went to Ancestry and in the Social Security Index this lady has the same date of birth as my Gt Aunt, so I am hoping it is her [-o<
I am not sure where to go next, the cemetery is in Providence, Rhode Island, she had died in Pawtucket.
Does anyone know what kind of records I could get?
Thanks
Ann

Hi Ann,

What is your gt. aunt's name, when did she pass and what cemetery is she buried in Providence?

If she passed before 1950, a copy of her dc would be easy to get, but after 1950 it can only be obtained by a relative of the deceased, at a cost of abt 18 US? However, the cemetery should have a listing of her burial with limited information, such as date of burial, plot number, who paid for the funeral and the undertaker's name. What I normally do is call the funeral parlor and ask them if they could help me out with any documentation they may have on file and sometimes I get lucky when they fax me a copy of the dc. Her obituary most likely was listed in the Providence Journal www.projo.com and it could list some additional clues?
The Journal does have a archive department, but I'm totally unsure of the cost? The library of the University of Rhode Island has the old copies of the Journal on film, but you need to visit in person to find it yourself, they won't do the lookup by mail, at least they wouldn't as of a few years ago.

List the info I asked for (if its after 1950, please pm it to me) and I'll help if I can.

Interesting that she lived in Bristol and wound up in Pawtucket. Bristol is a beautiful sea-side community in the southern part of Rhode Island and Pawtucket is city and located on the boarder of Massachusetts. Maybe she went to live with relatives in Pawtucket?

Regards
Marilyn

Hi Ann

Before I forget, please pm me your e-mail address, the information you have on the family that Jane worked for here in RI and the addresses from your 1920 & 1930 census or the census records themselves? I'd like to see if they were prominent members of society. Plus I may be able to e-mail you a link that will show the address, as I'm about to do in a pm. :D

Yeah its very beautiful and many prominent people are buried there, as well as some of us common folk. :) The cemetery is located off of Blackstone Blvd in Providence, which is a street address of many doctors, lawyers, professors, judges, bankers, etc.....

Ann, I only had to make three quick phone calls and one quick trip to the library down the road from my office to confirm that your suspicions were correct.

My first call was to Swan Point Cemetery. Their records are computerized so it only took a few seconds for the clerk to confirm the section of Swan Point that Jane is laid to rest in. She is buried on Forest Avenue and I have the Group and lot number. If you can wait a while, I'll get over there and take a picture of her gravesite for ya. The clerk also faxed me a map of her site and its located close to the main entrance off of Blackstone Blvd, so it should be simple to find. I'm looking at the map as I type this and she's very close to the "Alfred Stone Memorial" which you should be able to locate on the Swan Point site? The clerk also confirmed to me, Jane's parents names and that she was born in Kincardineshire, Scotland. Jane is buried with her husband, Edward "R" the last name which appears on her stone (protecting her identity) She was laid to rest on 2 Jan, a few day after her passing. The clerk also supplied me with the name of the funeral parlor.

My next call was to the funeral director, who was very helpful and confirmed Jane's parents information and it would appear that Jane had no children. Her niece Julia "P" was the informant. They had no death certificate on file and they were not able to fax me the information because it was in a large leather bound ledger and that they couldn't copy from. (not sure why, but ok)

The final call was to my local library right around the corner from my office. I called the reference section and asked what years they stored on micro film for the Providence Journal, 1965-Present....Oh wow, my lucky day, I mean your lucky day. So I popped in for 5 minutes and found Jane's death notice. Back then the Providence Journal had the early morning edition and late afternoon. I checked 29 Dec - 2 Jan
By the way 29 Dec, the date of Jane's passing was a Sunday (a little trivia)
The PJ have what we call an obitutary (family pays for the submission) and a death notice (which is considered news, and put in for free) Jane only had a death notice, which was printed in the 31 Dec edition. The notice doesn't list any family members names, besides her husband and her street address, which I'm going to pm you a picture of as soon as I finish this post. :)

Swan Point also confirmed her place of death which was the Eleanor Slater Hospital in Cranston, Rhode Island.

Just for the record, there are two parts to this site; The Eleanor Slater Hospital and MHRH. My mum worked as a nurse for MHRH for 40 years, until her retirement. Your g aunt passed in the hosptial section and not the Mental health area.

Regards
Marilyn

P.S. A little more trivia for your memory book......if Jane lived in Bristol, Rhode Island then she surely had to attend the annual 4th of July celebrations...

The Annual Fourth of July Celebration, established in 1785, is the oldest continuous celebration of its kind in the United States.

Its a great parade and we always have a fun time.......

Hi Marilyn,

Oh Wow! Thank you :D What a great start to the day! I cant believe you have got so much information, so she had remarried after all.

I had a look at the house, I was sure the property would have been gone, this is just amazing to be able to see where she actually lived :o
I love the style of the housing, in the area, were they mostly wooden? I have been googling the areas where she stayed, and its been like a geography lesson, Rhode Island is a lovely State.
I will go and ring my Mum now and let her know what you've found, she will be delighted.

I will pm you with all the other details.
I really cant thank you enough, this is just brilliant :D
