My g g grandmother Jane Cook 1824-1902 (born Stirling settled at Maybole) had 8 children to at least 3 different fathers. She has been fairly easy to trace and I have found her on all census records. I have managed to trace the children (3 died in childhood) except 2 - Jane McDowall or Cook born 1849 at Belfast and Angus Cook born 1865 at Maybole. I've all but given up on Jane but I'm interested in the Angus Cook, shoemaker who travelled to Canada in 1911. Although It gives a birth year of 1872 on the passenger list I'm fairly sure this is Jane's son. Many people from Maybole immigrated to Hamilton, Ontario - in fact it was called Little Maybole in the early 1900s http://www.maybole.org/Community/Citize ... canada.htm.
I know Angus's sister Eliza (Wands) was living there.
Anyway I have no idea how to go forward with this Angus once he reaches Canada to see if he's the correct one. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Hamilton, Ontario
Hi Annette:
I couldn't find Angus Cook in the 1911 census, which was taken on June 11, 1911.
There are ship's records of entry covering that period, but they are not searchable by surname. You'd have to know the ship's name, port of arrival or date and then scroll through the complete list. Thankfully, the ships weren't that big!
I did find Eliza (transcribed Elva?) living at 61 Victoria A(ve) Hamilton, along with her children and grandchildren. http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ ... p?id=29603
Husband George is on the previous page http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ ... p?id=29602
You may already have connected to http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gene ... dex-e.html
Will let you know if I find anything else.
Frances
Added later: The above page links show the microfilmed copy of the census.

Hi Annette,
On the Family Search Record site in the Ontario Deaths (1869 -1947) there are a couple of Angus Cook's born Scotland - don't know if they are yours, but might be worth a look.
regards
Barb

Re: Hamilton, Ontario
Frances,
I printed the record from the Canadian passenger list at Ancestry yesterday at the library but I've only got the left hand side of the page.
It was dated 14th February 1911(at least I wrote that down) and sailed from Glasgow. I'll need to look again tomorrow but I think it could have been called Saint John.
Thanks for the census link - I had forgotten about that. That is his sister Eliza and family. I also found a Great Uncle John
(Angus's nephew) at Hamilton too.
Barb,
I had a wee look at the Family Search pilot but not much luck I'm afraid.
He really is a wee mystery.
Many thanks to you both for your input.
Best wishes,
Annette

Re: Hamilton, Ontario
Hi Annette
I'm guessing here that your Angus might be buried in the same place that Eliza's son James Cook WANDS is....see here: http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa
search on Angus Cook gives you this ref: COOK, Angus Woodland Wentworth Flamborough East HM-334-2
search on Angus Wands give you this ref: WANDS, Angus Cook Woodland Wentworth Flamborough East HM-334-2
Eliza seems to be buried in Hamilton: WANDS, Eliza (Cook) Hamilton Wentworth Hamilton HM-288-2
and there are a whole pile of other WANDS listed!
I tried to find a possible wife for Angus but the only other COOK burial I'm seeing in that ref number is an unknown or unnamed COOK: COOK, - Woodland Wentworth Flamborough East HM-334-2
I'm circling at the moment looking for a place that might have MIs of the Woodland cemetery easily accessible.
Best wishes
Jean

I guess you can opt to pay the Ontario Genealogical Society...or you can probably find a volunteer here: http://www.raogk.org/ontario.htm that could get you a still photo.

I keep getting caught out also by there being sometimes no indication on an image of where and when it is from. This happens on many census pages on Ancestry also. If I don't note it down, or somehow incorporate it in the name I give to the file, then it is lost... I really appreciate the headers put on the images at SP!
The ship was the Cassandra, arriving in Saint John, New Brunswick (so you got the Saint John right... sort of!

All the best,
Sarah

Re: Hamilton, Ontario
Jean,
What can I say? =D>
Looking through the amazing OCFA site I can see many Cooks who I am sure are my dad's family. I was always curious about Angus as he was still single and living with his mother in 1901 but I have never found a death entry for him at Scotland. This is what makes me so sure it is him travelling to Canada in 1911 even though he is shown as 6 years younger than he should be.
I hope the volunteers at http://www.raogk.org/ontario.htm won't regret offering after I get in touch with them!
Best wishes,
Annette
