Thank you both - I usually find on Ancestry that less is best when searching - but I had tried without a given name & still couldn't find anyone - so I will try again with my new information & see what happens.
I appreciate the detail Sarah - especially in relation to the localities - it has taken me some years to get familiar with localities, parishes, towns, cities, counties in Scotland and England - and then probably only in 8 or 10 counties - so searching the US is somewhat of a test - I know name/location of most of the States - I know many of the English names appear in the US - and that's about it. I am somewhat glad we only have 6 states and 2 territories down here!

That doesn't stop me getting confused about them! It's what you're used to that seems easy!trish1 wrote: I am somewhat glad we only have 6 states and 2 territories down here!
All the best,

Re: Evans family in Los Angeles.
Many thanks to Sarah the Mystery of the Missing Grandchildren has been solved.
Between 1900 and 1913 Catherine W Evans lost three daughters and two sons in law. The mystery of why so many deaths in such a short time still remains.
The happy ending is that my L.A. Times access is back to normal.
All the best,
Alan
