Canada .....

Post by Cathy » Thu Nov 17, 2005 8:54 pm

Hi All,
can anyone in Canada help with this?
Seeking first entry into Canada by Herbert Law. I have the following:

Immigration Records 1926-1935
Herbert Law, male, age 50, English, Date of arrival 23/6/1929, Quebec. Ship Athenia,
Arthur Donaldson.
Ref: RG 76. Immigration, series C-1-a. Volume 1929 vol. 11. page 247
Microfilm T - 14755
SS Athenia, sailing from Glasgow 14th June 1929. Third Class.
11. LAW, Herbert, head, age 50, married, born England, London. Passage paid by self. Occupation-Machineman. Destination-son- Mr. W. Law, Georgian Bay Town, Midland, Ontario. Next of kin- Scotland-Mr. Robert McCallum (Susanna's Uncle)
33, Phoenix Park Terrace, Glasgow. Money in possession £6. Landed Immigrant.
States that he was in Canada September 1896-September 1899 Ilderton.
Can anyone have a look for this record please?
It may just have a scrap of information to help me make a dent in my longest brick wall.
I am pretty sure he was born in China, but his early memories are of Brighton, England.

Hi Cathy:

I’ve just had a quick look and sadly, prior to 1925 has not been digitized, so it will mean someone will actually have to look at the microfilm for you. This service is available through the National Library and Archives and I am attaching their link, so you can decide on time, costs (if any) and method. This page also provides contacts for professional researchers, eventhough the Canadian dollar equals about £.46, it could still get costly.

You may want to contact someone at the Ottawa Genealogy Society through their website – I’m sure that they would charge a lot less, than a professional.

I’m 500 miles from Ottawa  and our local library does not have this microfilm.

Frances

P.S.

The information you already have about Herbert Law’s 1929 arrival is in the attached document.

Hi Frances,
thanks for info.
I have a photocopy of that actual record from Canadian Archives.
I will have a try with the Genealogy Society.

Funny ... your data says
Ship: Athenia, Arthur Donaldson

... but the on-line version provided by Frances shows
Ship: Athenia, Anchor Donaldson

... as do a random sampling of other entries (searched by ship name "Athenia" without specifying a surname).

p.s. I'm only 450 km from Ottawa

Hi there,
thanks for lookup.
I feel sure he was in Scotland at this time. He himself was born 1879.
Did you notice any of the following with him?

1891 census:
RG12/835 Vol 11 Fol 124 pp 7
Lucton School Henfield Sussex (9 miles to Brighton) England.

Bertha LAW boarder born 1881 Canton CHINA
Herbert LAW boarder born 1879 Canton CHINA
Jessie LAW boarder born 1884 Canton CHINA
Ernest LAW boarder born 1885 Canton CHINA

1901 census: RG13 piece 557 folio 117 page 39 schedule 202
1, Peak Hill, Lewisham/Sydenham, London
Bertha Law, ward, single, age 20, Shorthand student, b. Canton, China.
Jessie Law, ward, single, age 17, Scholar, b. Canton, China.
Ernest Law, ward, single, age 16, Scholar, b. Canton, China.

I can't find him 1901 census in Britain, but he married in Glasgow in 1902.
No trace of his bride either, Susanna Bryce Cathcart who was born McGread in Maryhill, Glasgow 1880.
