Marriage in the USA ? .....

Post by meelymunch » Sun Sep 24, 2006 7:30 pm

Good evening all,
how can i find out if my ggg cousin got married in Philadelphia ,USA in 1907-08.

She was Isabella (Bella) Gifford born 1882. He was Alexander Morgan born 1886. Both born and lived in Banffshire.

She was single and living at home in 1901.
I recently found her on the http://www.ellisisland.org site Sailing from Glasgow to New York on June 15th 1907 on the SS Columbia. She was going to stay with Mrs Morgan (Alexander's mother i presume)

She had a baby girl Margaret Smith Morgan in 1908 , and i have the death cert which says she died aged 6 months on 2nd Dec 1908.On this cert the parents Alexander Morgan and Isabella Morgan M/S Gifford, so by then married.
I can't find her marriage cert to Alexander Morgan anywhere on Scotlands People and so assume they married at his mother's in the USA

Any ideas on how to find out?
Cheers, Carole.

have a look at the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness website. They have volunteers all over the USA who will look up records for you.

Hello Carole,

After reading carmen's excellent suggestion, I decided to take a look at the "SSDI" (Social Security Death Index) for Alexander & Isabelle Morgan in Pennsylvania. There are two listsings for an Isabelle + or - 5 yrs of the birth date you've provided.

Birth Date: 27 Oct 1883
Death: 1973 July

Birth Date: 19 Aug 1888
Death: 1966 April

Then for Alexander Morgan

Birth Date: 17 March 1879
Death: 1965 Jul

see above at www.LDS.org or by clicking onto the Sources link located at the top of TS's hompage.

For vital records see http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/BAH/DAM/vitalsta.htm

Marriage in the USA

Post by meelymunch » Sun Sep 24, 2006 11:01 pm

Hi, sorry i didn't put everything in my post.

The baby girl that died , she died in Banffshire Scotland. So it was only a visit to the States.
Alexander Morgan was killed on 31st July 1917 in France in WW1 . Bella Gifford Morgan died in Keith,Banff in 1926. Her son John Morgan was the informant (haven't found him yet)

It was finding a clue to where they were married that was bugging me. After not finding it on S/P i was wondering if they were indeed married at all. But all documents i did find seemed to indicate that they had been married.
After finding that she had travelled to America to see Alexanders mother in 1907 i just wondered if there was a way to find out if they had married over there.

Sorry to have misled you, thanks both for your help,
Cheers, Carole.

Hi Carole

If they returned to Scotland and had another child then his Scottish BC should contain the Marriage date and details of his parents. I realize this will have occurred in the newer than available online records but if some kind soul were to visit NRH in the near future then the info could be obtained there.

I had family that came to PA and married and then returned to Scotland and had 3 of their 6 children and then after their ailing parents were dead they returned to the states. It was the Scottish BC's that gave me the info that they were married in Philadelphia and the date of the event. Hope in your case it's the same!

Best wishes
Jean
