War Brides

Post by HeatherH » Wed Nov 08, 2006 6:21 pm

Hello there ,
2006 is the year of the War bride here in Canada .

http://www.canadianwarbrides.com/anniversary.asp

I thought some readers may enjoy reading of some of the articles that have been in our local papers this morning here in Halifax , Nova Scotia .During WW2 Pier 21 was our equivilant to Ellis Island and most of the War Brides and children passed through its gates . In fact it was the highest percentage of immigration ever at 60% .

Hi Heather

I thought that those articles were great, but wondered if there was anything on the War Brides of WWI.

Several exhibitions and collections can be found on the Canadian government site:

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/index-e.html

Enter the search term war brides

It will bring up a few book titles, but it will also show some archives for online viewing and links to other databases (don't know if there are any there that Heather hasn't covered)

I tried to find something specific about First World War Brides, without success, except for a book dealing with War Brides from the Great War to Vietnam. Unfortunately, it is not a digitised book.

http://www.virtualmuseum.ca/English/index_flashFT.html has a collection of exhibits for online viewing.

Nice write-ups in the papers Heather - caught some snippets on the National news. Hope the new memorial gets really good coverage on Saturday.

Hi Heather

Thanks for the info on the site. My only problem is that for some reason my computer can't read the Micro Soft Word File. :(
