USA Marriage .....

Post by Morag » Thu Jan 11, 2007 8:20 pm

Can someone advise me on the next step please ?
I have Marion Miller born 1864 Falkirk. I know that by 1899 she was in the US - but don't know where or if she was married ( her brother went to visit her then ) On the new passenger lists , there is a Marion Miller age 20,single,went to New York in Oct 1891 (age slightly out I know ). She was still in Falkirk for the 1891 census.
My question is - where do I find out if she married , when she died or had any children ? Is Ancestry the place to look ? There are no Marion Miller deaths on LDS site.
She may have lived in Trenton - her brother went there looking for work in 1899.(I have an amazing letter written by him outlining his life story )
Sorry to have so many questions , but I am not sure of my next step as most of my lot remained in Scotland all their lives.
Thanks

Morag

Hi Morag

I haven't had a look yet but wonder if you've found the passenger list from 1899 when her brother came to the US to visit her. These often have a name and location of who and where their final destination would be. This would help pinpoint her and then might find her on the 1900 census in the same place by just searching on a first name and age and place of birth....or the passenger info might even state a married name for her.....sooooo...what was the brother's name??

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

Thanks for the quick reply. He wasn't on the Ellis Island records and there were too many Thomas Millers on the immigration lists on findmypast to search.
He was born in 1876 in Falkirk - but moved to Leeds some time after 1898 when his father died - so I don't know which port he would have travelled from. He returned to Leeds from the States - arriving in Manchester from Philadelphia.A few years later he was off again - to Canada this time where he settled - I know all his details from then as I am in touch with his GGranddaughter.

Hi Jean

As far as I know he was alone. He mentions going to Canada with a friend on his 2nd trip , but no-one when he went to the States.

Hi Morag

Sorry to say but no luck yet. No sign of Thomas arriving that I've seen. Got all excited as there was one right age right date right everything and indexed as Thomnas Millnor or somesuch...anyhow...it wasn't him :( this one was a US citizen returning home.

I think the Marion Miller you found leaving might be the one which arrived NY first of Nov 1891...she was 20....except she stated she was bound for Blanksville (I think that was it....) Illinois. Soooo....not likely.

Found anohter interesting arrival of a Mary Millar in 1892 born 1864 Scotland but she stated she was a wife (but traveling completely alone) and was bound for Paterson NJ. This one really intrigued me since you stated that Thomas went to Trenton in his travels. Still can't find her in 1900 census so even if it was her...she's doesn't show up in later census or at least you can't prove it.

If you stumble upon any tiny clue whatsoever from the letter you say that Thomas wrote that might point to finding her don't hesitate to post it!!!

In the meantime.....I'll keep this one on the back burner....

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

Thanks for all your searching - I may have to accept defeat. On further examination of Thomas' letter , she was living in Trenton - but there was no mention of a husband or children. On the manifest I found , there was no mention of her travelling with anyone.

Maureen

Yes , this is the family. I know what happened to all the children except Marion. Her brother Thomas went to visit her but as he was born after 1875 he was not listed on IGI.My direct relative is son James.

Thanks again everyone

Hi Morag,
Could this be her in 1900?

47 Walter Ave, Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey
Johnston, Alexander, head, born Jan 1865, Scotland, married 8 years, came to U.S. in 1890, Newspaper Printer
__ Marrion, wife, born May 1864, Scotland, married 9 years, has had 4 children, 4 of whom are still living, came to U.S. in 1891
James, son, born June 1892 in Pennsylvania
Marrion, daughter, born Oct 1893 in Pennsylvania
June, daughter, born Sept 1895 in New York
Elizabeth, daughter, born Jan 1898 in New Jersey

The handwriting is very messy, but I think these are the facts. Note that he thought they had been married 8 years, she 9
Cheers,
Sarah

If this seems like the right family, I've now got them in 1910, 1920 & 1930. Just say the word... :D

Sarah
