To all you Canadians out there who have access to today's Toronto Star.

Wonderful three pages of Scottish History starting 1707. I imagine you who were lucky enough to e educated in Scotland would be well aware of all this.

Hi Lizzie.,
I have over 50 newspapers on line in my favourites.
The Toronto Star, The New York Times and the Sydney Morning Herald are all on line and my first reads in the morning.
As are a lot of local rags.
As my sisters familes ur all Canadians, I like to keep up wey what is going on locally.
So I check out the papers frae Leamington, North Bay, Mississauga and Oakville
It gives you some aspect of what is happening there and the thoughts of the editors.

I love the two paragraphs that begin "Nor would there ever have been a British Empire"

What do you think - did the guy who wrote that have Scottish ancestry

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

Maybe not as it's a reality that Scotland supplied a greatly disproportionate number of the officials who administered the empire.

Mary and Davie,

I liked the bit about Canada's first Prime Minister John A MacDonald who said "I was born British and will die British, our feelings exactly.

It was too bad we could not see the last page in the Star, when we were shown how the combined flags became the Union Jack.

...but, written by anyone other that a Scottish descendant - would that even have been written at all?
