Joseph Carson New York and New Jersey .....

Post by ninatoo » Fri Jan 19, 2007 1:00 am

Hi all,

Oh the things you find out in the last hours of a freebie time at Ancestry.com! I just did not get enough time to look for the people in this post so I am hoping someone can have a look for me!

Looking for my Joseph Carson b. 1880 Irvine. I found out through a ship's manifest (The Cameronia) that he went to the US in September 1923 with his wife Jessie M.S. Anderson (their sister in law Elizabeth Anderson m.s. Clelland was with them). All three state their age as 40 years. All three were born in Irvine Ayr Scotland. Jospeh states his occupation as Butler, but in Scotland 1901 census he was a Chemical Works labourer.

Joseph states that he had been in the US in 1905, Jessie in 1909 and Elizabeth in 1919. Now here is what I would like to find out:

* Joseph and Jessie probably married in the US between 1921 and 1923 as Jessie seems to have travelled in 1921 as a single woman. I can't recall how I discovered this, as it seems I may have forgotten to save THAT ship's manifest :( . Anyway I would like to find out if they DID marry in the US and when because I cannot find their marriage at SP.

* Since they both possibly lived in the US for some time before 1923, I would like to know if they are on the censuses for 1910, 1920 and 1930. I know they gave a address as 'home' on the 1923 manifest for Rahway New Jersey, but by 1941 they were living in New York City ( I found Joseph's WW2 registration card).

* I would like to know how to go about finding out when and where Joseph Carson and wife Jessie died (real name Janet) as I haven't investigated anything like that in the US before.

* I know Elizabeth's husband William Anderson was living in Rahway New Jersey in 1923, as that is where she was headed, but he had died in May 1929 New Jersey (I have a M.I. for him from Irvine - he was apparently shipped home for burial.) I would like to find out a bit about him and his wife. ( I think Elizabeth came back to Scotland and died in 1955. I have only paid for a one credit search however)

Any help appreciated!

Nina

Hi Nina

Wow these are hard people to find!! Not having much luck in any census year on Joseph...not even 1930 when You'd think he'd be there!! As for Jessie....nothting conclusive but there is a young unamrried school teacher boarding in New Jersey in 1920. Not in Rahway NJ though. She was born in Scotland and there are no other clues. Did Jessie ever work as a teacher????

The 1921 immigration records I can forward to you if you just PM me an email. I also have William and Elizabeth in 1920 in Rahway.

That's it so far.....not much to brag about there :(

Best wishes
Jean

PS...have seen the WW2 card on Joseph and it's surely them. It looks like he probably died before Social Security came into being or never received any benefits so tracking his death is very difficult. Jessie too for that matter. Without finding them on any census with any children there's nothing to work with.

Thanks very much Jean, PM sent.

I don't know if Jessie was a school teacher, because I haven't found her on the 1901 or 1891 Scottish censuses yet, and of course no marriage certificate, so it could be a possibility.

I have some McTaggarts who also went to New Jersey, connected to Joseph (his sister Ann Ellen's family). However they lived in Maywood New Jersey and Bergen New Jersey, although those addresses are for later than 1920. Also another connection is David Sloan who lived in Paterson New Jersey in 1926.

I am sorry to hear that this has given you so much trouble! I thought it would be an easy one! Oh well, just goes to show you, we should never assume!

Thanks again,

Nina

Wow Sarah, you are a champ! That looks like Joseph and Jessie alright, and as far as Elizabeth goes...I don't know..have to research her sons' births!

It is so odd, because my parents had a best friend years ago with the surname Curson, and we used to joke about being related...probably are one way or another!

Do you still have my email address or should I PM you for the pages?

Thanks again,

Nina

Thanks Sarah, all received and saved!

I will let you know about Elizabeth...probably her, but I need to find out about her and William's first immigration now in 1919, as it seems the boys must have been born before they left Scotland and therefore immigrated with them. Any chance of looking for them please?

Hi Sarah,

I don't think it could be my Elizabeth (at first glance) because the boys are too old...not that it matters I suppose. If that IS my Elizabeth she was either married before or had them illegitimately as she married William in 1915. Not sure I want to spend too much searching for her stuff yet....she is a twig on the tree really. She DID die in Scotland hopwever in 1955.

Jean, thanks for looking anyway; you have given me so much help in the past, that I forgive you!!!

Nina

Hi Jean,
That's what us other folk in different time zones are for :D Judging by the times you often post, I would venture a guess that you are running on very little sleep
Cheers!
A well-rested Sarah 8)
