american census 1910, 1920, 1930 .....

Post by karenc » Tue Feb 06, 2007 5:16 pm

Hi all

after reading russells success with finding his relatives on the census with the help of you kind people, i thought i might be a bit cheeky and ask if anyone can help me.

i have recently found out after randomly finding a distant relative via the internet, that 4 of my GG grandfathers children emmigrated to america.

this realtive does not know much and so we are trying to find out more

the 4 who emigrated are:
david sim born 1866 in slamannan, stirling and his wife also went her name is janet adams. now i have found a record for him on the ellis island site saying that he arrived on 26 sep 1904 on the ship astoria which departed from glasgow, now also on this same record were his brothers john sim (born 5 apr 1860,slamannan) and andrew sim (born 16 jul 1870, slamannan).

what is confusing me about john and andrew is that they are on that passenger list as being married which i know they are, but theey must have come back to scotland because they had children with their wives in slamannan after 1904. so why did they go? but i also think that they may have gone back to america with their family later on!

its very confusing

as yet i have found no record for james sim (born 4 may 1872, slamannan) and really the relative who i have been in contact with is more interested in him because that would have been his grandfather. although i am interested in all of the above.

so if any kind soul can help me out i would be very grateful :D

thanks

Karen

If you don't & no other kind soul can help I could have a look at it next time I am at FHC which will hopefully be this Sat.If not will be a few weeks as I am off galivanting the following few weekends.

Hi Joette,

i dont have a subscription or anyhthing for ancestry. i did at one time think about trying the free 14 day trail that they do, but when they ask for your credit card details just for the free trial that really put me off!

thanks

Hi Jean,

thats great :D :D :D
and so quickly as well! No wonder i couldnr find him what kind of spelling is that?
also i meant to mention that his wife wont be with him because she died before he and the children went to america. he actually had another son and he was really small when james wife died and he left him with another family till he was better placed to look after him. im actually tyring to find out more about him as well.

the baby was taken to canada with a family whose surname was neil, i think the mans name was james neil and i assume they would have went to canada around the same time as james and the other three kids went to america

its all very confusing :? :? :?

thanks again

karen

Hi Karen,
What is the name of the baby who went to Canada?

The Illinois marriage records up to 1900 are online... too bad James didn't come over just a bit earlier!

Does this look like him in 1910 with a new wife?

Stonington, Christian County, Illinois
Sim James, head, 37, 2nd marriage, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1908, coal miner
__ Lizzie N, wife, 35, 2nd marriage, born Illinois
__ Laurine(?) L, Stepson, 14, born Illinois
__ Nola E, Stepdaughter, 13, born Illinois
__Ray V, Stepson, 9, born Illinois
Sim William, son, 9, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1908
__Cathrine, daughter, 7, born Scotland, came to U.S. in 1908

It is odd in that his step children appear to have taken his surname, even though they are already teenagers

Regards,
Sarah

HI Sarah

That does look like it could be him. i have checked and he was married to a lizzie brown and according to what i have her kids were lawrence, nola and william.

so i think that could be him

thanks

karen

P.S the name of the baby was alexander caldwell sim, but he went with a family named neil. i know about who he married etc as i have been in touch with a direct descendant of his. what we were trying to find out was when he went to canada? and then later on they took him to america, not sure when :?

This looks to be Lizzie's family before her husband died, in the 1900 census:

Stonington, Christian County, Illinois
Charles W Brown, head, 33, born in Illinois, farmer
Lizzie N Brown, wife, 26, born in Illinois
Laurence L Brown, 4, born in Illinois
Nola E Brown, daughter, 3, born Illinois
Reuben Brown, 0 (born May 1900), born in Illinois
Sarah N Giles, Servant, 16, born in Illinois, domestic laborer
Charles Durbin, brother-in-law, 28, born in Illinois, farm laborer

Hi Sarah

yep that certainly looks like lizzie during her first marriage.

do you know if you can get passenger records for people coming to scotland from america?

the reason i ask is that as i mentioned before i have david sim, john sim, and andrew sim on a paseenger list to amerixa in 1904. now, davud stayed there but i have just realised that the other two must only have been there for a visit or something as their wives never went and both of them had kids in slamannan after 1904

thanks for your help

Karen

Not that I know of, unfortunately :(

So David and James stayed in America, but John & Andrew went back to Scotland? You say that you thing J&A might have gone back later to the States-- any idea of when that might be?

Sorry I'm not having much luck finding anyone later than 1910-- lots look promising, then after all aren't right  But I'll keep trying.

Sarah
