SarahND

This must be your Lewis Dart

Last Name First Name Town Years Volume Page Type

Dart Lewis Springfield 1844-45 14 144 Death

The Probate Records for Hampden County are available at the Massachusetts Archives. The Index is on microfilm and sorted by County for the years 1812-1986 and the original Probate Records are available through the County Clerk of Hampden. If you'll settle for the microfilm its at the archives, for the years 1806-1919.

Hi Marilyn,
Yes, that's my gggg uncle all right! The Springfield Registrar has his death of consumption on 23 Mar 1845 and his birth in South Hadley in Feb 1799. Springfield Town Vital Records has another record of him born in Springfield. Maybe his birth was entered there also when they moved. Probably means his older brother was born in South Hadley, so I'll try to find him there.

Unfortunately, his brother Wait, my direct ancestor, died before 1841 and his death is not mentioned in the newspaper, which is odd (since his siblings and parents' deaths are all mentioned there.) I am hoping to find a probate reference for him either in the archives or in Springfield. Given the choice, I always like to take down the old books and photograph the pages... even with all that dust they give less of a headache than hours of microfilm!

Thanks for looking,
Sarah
