Henry McKIBBEN and wife Mary .....
Hi All,
I found this couple in the 1860 census for Allegheny, Cambria, Pennsylvania:
Henry McKIBBEN age 39 b Scot. head
Mary McKIBBEN age 38 b Scot wife
Also children, Stephen, Celestine, Robert, James A, Joseph A, John A & Justin A.
I am interested in this couple because of an 1845 marriage in Rutherglen,Lanarkshire. This was for Henry McKIBBON and Mary LOHEAL. I think LOHEAL may be a variation of LOCHIEL. I have lost my Mary LOCHIEL after the 1841 census for Rutherglen (where she was 20). And I have been unable to find anything more for the couple Henry McKIBBON and Mary LOHEAL in Scotland. (she is the only LOHEAL in the whole of the brittish isles on both the IGI and Scotlandspeople).
Was wondering if mayby someone could please find a death for this Mary?
Thanks
Karen McCubbin

Hi Karen
Marilyn has given you some handy advice. Since I also volunteer for RAOGK in the US then consider my reply as satisfying her suggestion too
!
I searched for your McKibbon family and all it's myriad spellings and I've found some interesting records. The beginning portions that you have of the marriage and disappearance of Henry and Mary ties right in with this possible immigration record:
Henry McKibbon
Estimated birth year: abt 1820
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Glasgow and Greenock, Scotland
Ship Name: Warren
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Date of Arrival: 6 Apr 1848
accompanying Henry on the passenger list is a Mary McKibbon same age. No child though which I found interesting as the 1860 census record you found in Allegheny township PA surely pointed to Stephen being born in Scotland. Well....let's move along from there. With such a lovely large family and such an easy to read census return in 1860 it's truly amazing that nothing is found on this lot for 40 years!!!! I've been sifting 1870 and 1880 census records pretty hard and so far I've not even a suggestion where they were hiding. Have considered returning to Scotland for a good look around but haven't got that far yet.
Jump ahead to 1900 though and I believe we may have hit paydirt. In Chicago, Ward 5, Dist 134 Cook County you'll find a:
McKibbon, Mary, b. Oct 1819, widow, has had 8 or 9 children (splotchy pen) but claims only 1 is living
she was b. Scotland as were both her parents. SHe claims she immigrated to the US in 1848. In the same household there is:
McKibbon, Justin b. June 1869 age 30 single b. PA, parents b. Scotland Occ: grocer
Now I realize that the age is wrong for this to be the same Justin from 1860 but hold your horses a minute.....
In 1920 Ward 3 Chicago there is:
McKibban, Justin A. age 59, single, b. PA, parents b. Scotland occ: real estate agent
and in 1930 Chicago:
McKibbon, Justin A. age 69 b. Pa, Parents b. Scotland, "glascow"
his occupation is salesman, real estate.
Add all that up and I feel almost positive that this is the Justin A. from the 1860 census and the Mary that was with him in 1900 is your Mary. If this is the case then her death should be in Chicago between 1900 and 1920 at this point as I haven't found Justin in 1910 yet......but surely she couldn't have lived many years beyond 1900.
Will keep looking but wanted to share the findings so far....
Best wishes
Jean

ok here's Justin in 1910
1910 United States Federal Census
Name: Justin McGibbon
Age in 1910: 49
Estimated birth year: abt 1861
Birthplace: Scotland
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Scotland
Mother's Birth Place: Scotland
Home in 1910: Chicago Ward 3, Cook, Illinois
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1908
Occ: Grocer
Note they have a year of immigration in the index but when you examine the original image the entry in that column has clearly been erased. I think the enumerater made an error and the indexers tried too hard to recreate it!
The real critical piece here....there is no mother Mary. Now off to search for possible deaths indexes....
Best wishes

Well Karen take a look at that...
The folks around here are truly remarkable and we should all give them a round of applause. =D>
Jean, I didn't know you were one of those RAOGK volunteers, but I'm not surprised? Good for you! Thanks for all your hard investigation work on this. Hey, they have an job opening on CSI.
Regards
Marilyn

WOW! what a quick responce.
Thank you marilyn for the link. And thanks "heymarky" and Jean. I've had a quick look through and the only thing making me think it may not be mine is that she states both parents are born in Scotland, but mayby she didn't want to admitt irish heritage if she didn't have to.
No wonder Jean couldn't find them in 1870, Krien doesn't even come close to McKibben. I know what you mean with all the different spellings for McKibben Jean. On the IGI if you enter the last name Mauchline you come up with McLean, so you would think that McKibbon/McGibbon/McCubbin would all come up the same for a search, but no, you have to do a different search for each spelling, even down to the last two letters ie McKibbIN brings up different results than MckibbON.
