Don’t worry about the Court Martial. A Court Martial was almost as good as, if not better than, a medal. See this page.

Trouble with the Australians
In 1918 an average of 9 per 1,000 Australian soldiers in Europe resided in prison.
Among Canadians, New Zealanders and South Africans there was an average of 1.6 per 1,000 men behind bars.
Field-Marshall Douglas Haig was convinced this was due to the low standard of discipline among the Australian divisions.

I also have a memory (from somewhere but I cannot recall where) - it was noted when UK soldiers left without permission they were shot for desertion - Australian soldiers were charged with being AWOL docked 5 days pay & sent back to the front.
The court marshall could have been for any small (or large) thing. One of mine that I got a copy of was for falling asleep on guard duty

Hi Iluvu2 and everyone else,
This site
http://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/Family ... tions.html Has a lot of head stone photos for Queensland. I did a site search and there was only one Shanks listed. I grew up in Brisbane (not far from Ipswich in Australian terms) and there were a couple of Shanks at school with me.

Sherwood Cemetery is in this list as well - probably slightly easier to navigate

I hope to be at the State Library next week so will check if they have the CD/Fiche for Ipswich cemetery & if so, see if any Shanks are there

Bundamba is a suburb of Ipswich - it would depend on the time and whether cremated or buried.
http://www.ipswich.qld.gov.au/residents ... /index.php
Many of our Ipswich family members were cremated at the Mt Thompson Crematorium Holland Park - I don't think they have an online site but are very helpful if you call/write to them.

I don't think there is a crematorium at Ipswich - but I could be wrong.
