I didn't have too great a day at the library - they have little Ipswich information - I will have to get to the Ipswich library or historical society to get most of what is available. I did find some fiche - but when I got home, I realise I have only got the index of the Colombarium wall - not the full cemetery - so apologies - if I get to Ipswich, I will check for more.
These were the ones I listed
Shanks Eunice M 1991 85 22.6E4S
Shanks Hilda E 1970 58 14.2W1D
Shanks Jessie A 1971 (no age) 17.2W1D
Shanks John J 1985 (no age) 17.2W1D
Shanks Leonard R 1973 65 23.2E4D
Shanks Robert W 1969 66 14.2W1D
Headings are name - when died - age - reference (which looks to be the location). You can probably put couples together based on the same reference.

SHANKS
Trish Thank you for taking time to do yhat for me and I hope you found what you were lookiing for,for your own search.I do not recognise any of the female names such as Eunice but obviously she would have been the generation after ,possibly a grandaughter of ;Oor Margaret, If I win the lottery I would go to Ipswich{wishful thinking}

Hi iluvu2
Just a word on the female names you dont recognise.
Remember that they are in Oz and the Scottish naming patterns may have fallen by the wayside. Names like Eunice may be "popular" names around the area at the time or there could be Aussie connections

Remember that some of the women probably married into the family - given the age, you should be able to check online for birth of Robert and Eunice (would be tricky to find if not a shanks!)
As mentioned by Stewie my families from Scotland had largely given up on the naming patterns after the 2nd generation in Oz. It could relate to the fact that they began to marry into other groups (English/Irish). From 1870s onwards they were using mothers' and grandmothers' family names as the generation connection, rather than the naming patterns.
Trish
The Ipswich library has a small history section which would probably contain information on the burials. Why not use the "Ask a librarian" query as to who, named Shanks - is buried in the Ipswich Cemetery

Ahhh - just noticed this is supposedly for library members only.
Try this link instead
http://library.ipswich.qld.gov.au/lh/enquiry.htm - looks to be a better option

Trish ,I sent an enquiry to the library link you gave me ,I will see if some kind hearted soul may find Oor Margaret,s death.Im on holiday from work this week so hope to have some more time for my unqueanchable thirst for genealogy ,yes it was the same here people were apt to name a child with a name both parents like and perhaps give a middle name after some relative, doing away with 20 Maggies and 20 Jimmy,s in each family

Re: A STEP FURTHER
I would assume that they didn't find a burial & simply checked the deaths microfiche - there is no location on the fiche. If you wanted to go further with this line you could buy the death certificate for Margaret, which would hopefully have (as well as death details) marriage, children and burial informationiluvu2 wrote:Trish, just a note to say someone at Ipswich library told me Margaret Shanks my gt,gt granny died in 1918 they would not tell me where, but at least I know when, hope you are having some joy with your own

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY
Hi Trish, I thought about buying it but Im not sure what it will cost,so I decided to leave it for a wee while. I have been watching a TV prog. called Wanted Down Under, enjoying it as it was filmed mostly in Qld.

Re: TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY
Will cost somewhat more than those in Scotland & take considerably longer with much red tape - but for when you win the lotteryiluvu2 wrote:Hi Trish, I thought about buying it but Im not sure what it will cost,so I decided to leave it for a wee while. and if I am reading it correctly they are just so busy it takes 12 weeks to register your new baby!!!!!!!!!!!!! and 4-6 weeks to get a certificate. The WORST people I have ever had the misfortune to have to do any type of business with. I am very pleased that most of my Australian families were born married and died outside of Queensland. Just happens to be where my husband and child were born!
