Are NZ Army Records available on-line?

Post by q98 » Wed Feb 06, 2008 11:05 am

Are NZ Army records available on-line as they are here in Oz? I am seeking the record of my great-uncle, Rifleman Hugh McCREADIE (born 29 April 1902 at Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland) who, along with some of his family, arrived in New Zealand in 1924 onboard SS RUAHINE. I do not know his Service Number.

The Otago Daily Times of 9 August 1957 carried his death notice.

Kindest regards.

Hello Jim,

There’s some information here.
http://www.nzdf.mil.nz/personnel-records/archives.htm

The position seems to be.
Records after 1920 to remain with N.Z. Defence Force archives.
Records before 1920 to be transferred to Archives New Zealand.

See also Archives New Zealand.
http://www.archives.govt.nz/doingresear ... lfiles.php

I doubt there’s much prospect of files held by Defence being made available online. I don’t think there’s any N.Z. equivalent of the Australian WW2 data available on the Australian War Memorial site but I could be wrong. A Kiwi would have a better idea.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere about N.Z. WW1 files being put on line as are the Australian but I might be thinking of this N.Z. WW1 site currently under construction at http://deepthought.hass.adfa.edu.au:8088/index.html which along with its up and running Australian WW1 twin http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8080/index.html contains a fair bit of detail from Personnel records.

Here’s some N.Z. Military links http://www.genealogylinks.net/newzealand/nzmilitary.htm

Possibly no help but it's interesting.
Alan

Many thanks for those links Alan. Genealogy is a curious thing in that just occasionally one thing leads to another, etc.

You never know.

Thanks very much Kenspeckle,

That's an excellent site. I can see some of my people there.
