Maffra Colony, Victoria,, Australia .....
Does the name Maffra Colony, Victoria ring any bells with anyone?
Three brothers amongst my ancestors were there at one point. All three, Robert, Andrew and William WALKER appear to have died, over there, all in August 1857. I'm curious about what happened to them.
Any hints about where to look for information would be warmly welcomed.

Hello Catriona,
I have not got any further back than my John Stirling, whose parents were James Stirling and Mary Anderson who were married 30 Jan 1824.
They had several children according to the IGI (in Haggs, Denny) but JOhn does not appear in the list. (There is gap in their births where John would fit in! so perhaps his name was transcribed wrongly - I will have to look harder!!)
I also have a Margaret Russell in my Clark family who married John Clark in Shettleton Lanarkshire in 1846. Her parents were Robert Russell and Elizabeth Robertson. Unfortunately all my ancestors seem to have very common names so it is difficult to find them prior to 1855.
Glad you liked the ozgen site. I also spent some time looking at it.
Cheers Fiona

Hi Catriona,
I looked at Helen Stirling's family when I was looking for the family of my Ggrandmother Agnes Stirling as Helen had a sister Agnes born in 1859. My Agnes was born in 1854 (unfortinately as she does not appear in the OPR or IGI) but I found her Death Certificate which took me back a couple of generations. Perhaps your Helen and my Agnes were connected in some way.
Cheers, Fiona

Born in Maffra
Hi Batriona I was born in Maffra and have some knowledge of the area I will look into the Walkers's for you, sounds very interesting. I hope to be visiting there shortly to do some research myself on McCole's and Weatherley's.
I will take note of their names for you. I know there were Walkers lived in the small farming community of Newry about 7 miles from Maffra. Will try and post some pics of Maffra for you cant promise too soon.
Cheers Clare I love this site Caroline has been very helpful on my Appin and Haddington ancestors.

Catriona/Clare
l recall Maffra/Newry from my navy days, a friend used to take me home on weekends to his parents place (they managed a dairy farm), the owner owned a few properties and had lived in the area for generations. Great for a young lad from the west to have the chance to stay with a family. I recall the Newry hotel, if I am correct it was the oldest licenced hotel in Victoria, and it had been in the family for generations, but dont know their name unfortunately.
Sorry I cant be of any help though in the family history side
