Geelong Records

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm currently hunting for information on Robert Hugh Leckie who was born abt 1862 in Geelong, Victoria. His 1885 marriage certificate in County Durham names his father as John, a grocer, deceased. I've found a Post office directory for Geelong from 1866-67 naming a Mrs John Leckie, Grocer in Moorabool St.

Leckie wasn't a common name in Victoria at that time so I suspect that Mrs. Leckie was John's widow. I just can't find any birth records for Robert or the death of John between 1861 - 1885. Came across what looked to be an excellent site at: http://zades.com.au/gandd/index.php/databases/gddbs but when I try a search it trundles on for, literally, hours without yielding any results. I've tried three different browsers on three different computers on FOUR different networks.

Could some kind antipodean soul give it a try from your end?

Robert's mother wasn't Margaret Veitch or Mary Jane Williams and I've tried spelling variations of Lake, Leck, Lecky, Leckey, Lakey etc., etc.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hello Andy,

Victoria BDMs are here https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/i ... chCriteria The certificate info is similar to Scottish but are more expensive. A full page of search results will only cost 99c and has parent's names so best to try to get as many Leckie BDMs into a page of results as possible. It looks like all there is for Robert, father John, is the 1861 birth.

You'll find the deaths of John and Margaret in the Geelong Advertiser along with a detailed inquest report. http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/resul ... 6&q=leckie

They are buried in Geelong Cemetery. http://mapping.gct.net.au/Mapping/Default.aspx

The site you posted seems to be working ok. There's an R. Leckie 1881 reference to Geelong Infirmary and Benevolent Asylum: Annual Reports 1852-1922. In the newspapers in 1878 there's reference to alleged hallucinations suffered by Robert Hugh Leckie so perhaps there's a connection. http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/resul ... +leckie%22

Hope that helps,
Alan
