Early Australian records

Post by StewL » Fri Nov 25, 2005 2:53 am

Hello all
I thought I might put this information in the resources section.
The following CD-Rom’s are useful resources for those who have long losts who went to the colonies.

I am in no way endorsing a commercial product, I have placed it here so that people can see what is available, and therefore may be able to access them in their local library.

A search of some of the genealogical societies in Australia will give people an idea of what other records are available.
Unfortunately the sad part is that the Pioneer Indexes are very expensive, so I doubt I will ever get them myself.
The Victorian Pioneers Index 1837 ? 1888 929.39VIC ISBN 0864443455
The Tasmanian Pioneers Index 1803 ? 1899 929.39TAS ISBN 0864442998
The Western Australian Pioneers Index 1841 ? 1905 Fiche Only??
The New South Wales Pioneers index : Pioneers series 1788 ? 1888 929.39NEW ISBN 0864442920 (Pioneers series)
The New South Wales Pioneers index : Federation series 1889 ? 929.39NEW 1918 ISBN 0864442920
The Queensland Pioneers index 1829 – 1889
(It is around but I have not been able to find its ISBN).

There are a lot more different resources around on Micro Fiche and CD’s. Whether they are available in peoples respective bailiwicks I have no idea

I do have copies of some of the indexes - While I was saving up I used the copies at my local LDS centre. They are probably available, or can be ordered in at any LDS centre.

For information on the "Pioneers" - 1788 to about 1900 - the LDS sell an AVRI covers 4 states (NSW VIC TAS and WA) for about 7 pounds - rather cheaper than other options. (It cannot be purchased in Australia).

The information on the NSW and Vic and WA CDs given by Stew is almost the same as that available online (NSW free, WA free, Vic for a fee). The CDs do provide better searching options and the NSW one has some extra births that are not online. The Tasmanian archives site uses information from the pioneers index in their Family links data base
http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/nameindexes

Unfortunately, if researching Queensland the only other options to the CDs are libraries and the LDS.

Western Australia http://www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au/_apps/pi ... fault.aspx Births to 1932 marriages to 1936 deaths to 1965
Victoria - PAY to VIEW for indexes and certificate images (somewhat more expensive than SP)
http://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/home/family+h ... tificates/
Births to 1908 (on CD to 1920) marriages to 1942, deaths to 1985
ACT - with NSW until 1930. Death index to 1973 http://www.ors.act.gov.au/community/bir ... eath_index

SAG gives a good summary for all the states http://www.sag.org.au/helping-you/resea ... ?task=view

Hello Puffin,

That one’s been found more times than Eureka, but it’s so good that it could probably stand a dozen more.

But I don’t think anyone has given us a proper list of titles before, so thanks very much for that.

And it’s definitely worth a reminder, not only for chasing up relatives in Oz, but also because a lot of UK news was reported in the Australian Papers for people hungry for news from ‘Home’.

All the best,
Alan
