WILLIAM REID .....

Post by jennovo » Fri May 05, 2006 2:26 am

Hi All,

I need some rethinking and hope lots of heads are better than one!

William George Reid is my g.grandfather and the story goes:-
As per marriage (married in Australia) and death certs. William was born in 1869-72 (varied between marriage and death) in Tranent, East Lothian. On his marriage cert. he gives his parents as David Reid and Catherine Hogg, and states that he was born in Tranent; this is also on his death cert.
I have purchased the marriage transcription of his parents and even of his Reid grandparents - all seems correct. My problem is; I cannot find a birth cert. for William to truly tie him to his family. I have tried SP census records but the ones I have viewed have not been correct and there are so many Reids.
My great aunt told me that William was born in Glasgow, at 9/10years emigrated with his parents to New Zealand, stayed a year, and then came on to Australia.
As of yet I can find no immigration records for the family or deaths for his parents in New South Wales.

All help most welcome.
Jennifer.

Hi Jennifer,

You said you've tried the Census records on SP, but have you tried to search for William's birth records on SP? It should be there if he was born approx. 1859 and have you tried to search for it using wildcards?

That was my thought too Marilyn

My Reids were listed most often as RIED both in Ayrshire and in Paisley.

I don't think the spelling would be any better in Tranent - after all they pronounce it Turnent still.

Another thought is that he may have been illigitimate and registered under Hogg? I have a lot like that.
