Hi Marilyn

Lots of reasons for people to go to South Africa. There are many people of Scots descent there, having gone over in C19 early C20. Maybe your people already had relatives there or perhaps they just went to work. Even in more recent times, and even before apartheid ended, plenty of Brits who were not too particular about the political situation went over to work.

BTW My husband who moved in the other direction and is of English descent assures me that the ones called MacKenzie were all drunks....that figures!

Swiscot, Jim, may like to get nostalgic at http://kaburus.com I don't have Joseph Thompson in the Legends section but he deserves to be there. He was also the second European to see Mount Kenya (Kirinyaga). And (re)named areas of Kenya that are still in use today, Aberdares after Lord Aberdare president of the Royal Geographical Society. The famous Treetops Hotel is in the Aberdares.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

My late father in law, went to Rhodesia after the war. He was in the RAF, for a while after war too. His father had gone there earlier, and had a civil engineering business, but lost it during UDI, and through a fondness of his father for the drink and women ( :D ). He also admitted that a fondness for the drink and doing most of his business in the "club" didnt help either.
He was English/Scots descent. M-i-l born India "Calcutta" father a squaddie, actually a drummer in the pipe band, Scots descent, I believe from a line of squaddies ( :D ).

Long winded way of agreeing with earlier post, in that a lot of ex-servicemen went to "South Africa" after the war. The term "South Africa" did cover a few of the "colonies" including South Africa itself. :D

Hi

I would guess that if it says South Africa it probably means the country of South Africa. After all if they had been in Basutoland (Botswana) or Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) or some other country in Southern Africa it would probably have said that.

Pity they are not pictured standing near some obvious landmark such as Table Mountain! Is there any striking landscape feature which would make it possible to have a guess at where they are?

Anne

Sorry no identifiable landmarks, just the sky and part of a tree. The picture is of two couples at a picnic table.

Best Regards
