Hello there
Have been trying to find marriage details of one of my Mackay rellies.
I can't find them in Scotland ,despite them both being scottish.
Family history is that they went to South Africa at some point and I have recently found photos which would confirm this. I don't ,however, know if they married while out there or perhaps England.
I've been led to believe that they must have married before they went out as they had at least one of their children with them.
The children I believe were born after 1905. How easy are the English records to search if all you have are names? I've tried the 1837 online but didn't make much of it.
thanks
Fiona

Hi Fiona you could try http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
much the same as 1837 and some say it has less than 1837 but its much easier !
Unless you live near the local records office ( of which i have a friendly one !) or the GRO Family Records Center and have all the time in the world to spend looking - difficult ! or maybe i just havnt found the easy way yet
If you have a slight inckling on where they could have been born in England (if at all) you could try phoning the local records office. I did this this once with about as much information as you have and i wont name the office up "Up North" incase they get into trouble but they came up trumps. Must have been a quiet day
http://www.genuki.org.uk/ has links to the relevent offices.
Appologies if im covering old ground

Hi Tracy
They were both born in Scotland and if they got married in Scotland then it would be at SP(late 1890's onwards)which makes me think they must've got married else where.
Their names were George Mackay and Catherine Mackay. I already have another couple with exact same names and I've found their marriage but no signs of the other two.
Of the 5 children they had,two sdaly died in Scotland and I have their certs - what I don't know is if these two were oldest or youngest kids.
This just might be one I'll have to leave for now and wait for something to turn up!
thanks for the websites I will check them out.

One of my lot's children was listed on one of the censuses as having been born in Mauritius
Thanks to the great people on this site, I was pointed in the direction of military service. On 1837online I found that childs birth recorded in military records, used the volume and page numbers to order a birth cert from GRO which I recently received.
Again, advice on this forum has taught me to think "out of the box" and search sources I'd never even considered. =D>

Hi there
It was thanks to a generous offer from someone on this list that I managed to find out that they did indeed marry in South Africa. Haven't been able to find the actual certificate etc but the date of their marriage was on the birth certificate of one of their children born after 1905.
This site is brilliant!
