Post by MissNUFC » Sun Feb 18, 2007 7:02 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to trace a William Stoddart who went to china from glasgow (I think) between say 1867 and 1871. Any idea how i could do this?

Thanks
Vikki

Dear Vikki

Do you know what his trade or profession was? I too have a relative who went to China in the 1870s - he went as a medical missionary. I found him with the greatest of luck, purely by typing his full name into google. he turned up in the archives of the University of Birmingham ...

It's most certainly worth a try if you've not already done that.

I would also suggest that you read up a bit about the trade which was going on between China and the rest of the world at the time. We'd had the Boxer rebellions and there was also a roaring opium trade. My ancester was involved in a hospital at Hang Chow which while trying to convert the locals to Christianity, also helped with opium addiction.
