A covenanter query:

I'm interested in one Andrew Guillan/Guillane, buried near Magus Muir in Fife, the only one of the nine assassins of Archbishop Sharp to ever be executed specifically for his part in the murder. I found a few paragraphs about him on the web:
Hi lesley
I don't know too much about Andrew other than he was from Cockpen?
Not too sure.
I am happy to share all I have on The Covenanters and Ulster Scots.
However, I do not think this is the Board to do it on.
You can e-mail me on this.
Or send me a PM
I have a few "Doublers" on the ones I have listed, more than happy to send ones you are intersted in.
No fee, but a donation to a "CHRISTIAN CHARITY" of your choice would be the price.

Hi Lesley
Andrew only appears in the books in association with Sharp's execution
Here is an extract from Barr's The Scottish Covenanters"
The Spelling of his name varies from book to book.

RETALIATION FOR SHARP'S DEATH
Andrew Guillan, a weaver in Balmerino, held the horses of the Covenanters at the massacre, but did his best to save Sharp's life. He was tried in Edinburgh, July, 1683, and found guilty of the archbishop’s death, and was sentenced to have both of his hands cut off at the foot of the gallows, and then hanged, his head to be cut off and his body to be carried to Magus Moor and hung up in chains.
The other five Magus 1Vloor martyrs were--Thomas Brown, Edinburgh; James Wood, Newmilns ; Andrew Sword, Galloway ; John Waddell, New Monklands ;and John Clyde (or Clide), Kilbride. They were taken prisoners at Bothwell, and although they had no connection whatever with Sharp's massacre, they were condemned to death and sent to Niagus Moor for execution. Their sentence ran-" That they be carried to the Muir of Magus, in the sheriffdom of Fife, where his grace the Archbishop of St. Andrews was murdered, on the r8th day of November inst., and there to be hanged till they be dead, and their bodies to be hanged in chains until they rot, and all their lands, goods and gear to fall to his majesty's use."

Hi Davie
Thanks for that. I have been collecting bits of information about him. Andrew is buried near Magus Muir but not with the other Martyrs. David Haxton (or bits of him...) is buried in Cupar.
The Spelling of his name varies from book to book
Yes, I know. Guillan is one of the (many!) spelling variations I've come across.

Best wishes
Lesley

Until this week with the release of the 1861 Census I thought that John Veitch was born Eddlestone & was long gone before 1861-how wrong can you be.Turns out he was born Crawford Muir which I know??? was a Covenanting area. However on the other side of the family(THe News of the Worlds but which side.)MY granny we have Covenanters who signed the flag-repudetly in their own blood which hangs or hung in the Art Galleries in Glasgow-Ive just had a "Mature moment" & cant remember its name but the one next to the Uni & the Western. My Granny told me but maybe thats another of her stories.
The Scotts who descended from the Veitches were a Non-Conforming lot.
John Veitch is presenting me with lots of conundrums but if I find any connection will let you know.
What books do you have - ISBN numbers if you know theyre still in print please.
