Hello Peggy, and Welcome to TalkingScot.
The fire was reported in the Glasgow Herald, 28 October, 1889. It appears that the baptism and marriage records survived the fire. In his note Rev. Dr. Gordon was probably referring to the “antiquarian books” mentioned in the newspaper report.

“The wall on the west side also fell outwards, and great masses of brickwork crashed through the roof of St Andrew's Episcopal Church. The entire east gable of the church, with the chancel and vestry were demolished by the falling walls. A fine memorial window to Dean Routledge was smashed to pieces, with two other stained glass windows in the eastern gable. The altar, valuable old silver altar vessels, stalls, Bishop's throne, candlesticks, &c., have all been destroyed. The vestry, which contained a rare collection of antiquarian books, and presses filled with ecclesiastical curiosities, has also succumbed, but the baptism and marriage records have been preserved intact.”
All the best,
Alan
