Place name in/near Kilmarnock AYR

Post by Smuggler » Mon Dec 01, 2008 12:27 am

Hello
I have located my probable gt gt gt gt grandmother's Death Certificate and it states she was born in [????????} Kilmarnock AYR. I have ordered the certificate as the online version is very poor and the place name is extremely difficult to read but looks like Royallan or Ramallan. It looks more like an R than a P. Does anyone with Ayr knowledge have any idea of what this place name could be? The family were Reid.
With thanks

Hello Anne,

There is a great wee map of Kilmarnock showng names of residents in 1819 http://www.dangly.com/kilmarnock/maps/kilmarno.htm

Maybe you could upload the death entry to the gallery to get some help with the place name.

Instructions here - viewtopic.php?t=6496

Regards,
Annette

Later...............Was just coming back to suggest Rowallan and I saw Nancy's post. :D

I had a browse at FREECEN for Reids at Kilmarnock and found a few at Rowallan including a family at Rowallan Castle.

Hello Nancy and Annette
Thank you both very much for your replies. When you look at the document and have a clue as to what the place might be it becomes so obvious. The map of Kilmarnock is fabulous and her father's name was James Reid and I note a Jas Reid on the list of residents.

Christina was born about 1782 (haven't located the birth/baptism as yet) as she has been known as Christian, Christina, and Christiana (daughter of James & Margaret Reid, but, if not her father in 1819 possibly a brother or relation. Wonderful thank you both and I was amazed at the swift responses.
A very excited
