Gortenlaid or Gartanlaid or Gartenlead depending on which census year (1841 to 1861) is used, all in Argyll. This does not show up in any of my searches, perhaps an abandoned village with no records other than my ancestor's census ones. Dugald Stewart is the name, common enough but his wife and children fit.
Can anyone help?
Where is Gortenlaid in Argyll

Hint for anyone looking for this place: it is in the parish of Lismore and Appin.

Re: Where is Gortenlaid in Argyll
I have not found Gortenlaid (or similar) on a map, but...
Looking at the neighbouring properties named on the same census page from 1851, and the description of the area given on the free header page, I think Gortenlaid must be one of the un-named poperties on this map:
http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74478059
Or to locate that area on a current map: current OS map of Airds House area of Appin. Zoom this map out until you can recognise the location, such as relative to Oban.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Where is Gortenlaid in Argyll
Like Andrew I followed the enumerator's route (1841). The households before are at 'Glackerisha' (FREECEN transcription) and after is Aird's House. You can see Glaceriska and Aird's House clearly on this map near the NW corner with a few buildings in between - so at least you get a rough idea of location.
Probably just my computer Andrew but it wasn't connecting to the map with your link.

Annette

Thanks all for your replies. It most probably is that unmarked house. Strangely, I now the area well having visited it, at least I thought so.
The old maps on NLS are great, I had not used these before. Now I want to include the links into FTM.
