Tracing the history of a building.

Post by ziggymole » Sun Jan 16, 2011 8:18 pm

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help point me in the right direction for tracing the history of a house. The house in question is called "Skiffview" and was apparently built by my greatgreat grandfather Peter BLACK who was a quarry owner and contractor. The house is still standing on Quarrelton Road, Johnstone, Renfrewshire but where would I need to look to confirm the builder and build date?

Many thanks
Jan

Hi Jan

The Sasine Records at NAS may have the information you were looking for. Quite often the builder was the first owner and sold it off.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for your quick reply. I don't want to appear dense but I really don't have a clue as to what sasine records are or what the NAS is short for. #-o

Sorry
Jan

Hi Jan,

NAS = National Archives of Scotland. See http://www.nas.gov.uk

Sasines - see http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/sasines.asp

Voters Rolls and Valuation Rolls records may also assist your search.

Hi Jan

Just took a quick look. My guess would be 1895-1905.

My thanks to all of you for your help. Now I need to persuade my daughter to do some research on my behalf.

Oh dear, I'm afraid I'm going to need some clear instuctions on how to search your Scottish records. I've followed the links you provided AndrewP and the info on Sasines was very useful but I cannot for the life of me find a way to search the catalogue and get results which make any sense, I can't seem to narrow the thousands of sasines results to get ones for Johnstone or even just Renfrew and what is a burgh?

As some of you may have gathered I'm an English woman living in South Wales, blonde and slowly dementing  any help will be gratefully received as my daughter hasn't the time in her lunch break to do more than go to the right place with the right reference.

Many thanks
Jan

Hi Jan,

The NAS online catalog can be searched at http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/

However, the online catalog does not include the Register of Sasines. On the page above, click on 'help', then 'What's Not On?' to see the list of records which cannot be searched online.

All the best,

AndrewP
