Stroul Lodge, Clynder, Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire
From Google maps it appears that the above Lodge is back from the road among the trees - does anyone know if this is correct? The address on Scotland places is given as Shore Road - which appears to be a continuation of Rosneath Road, the address given by google. One of my extended family was working there in 1851 for a Peter E Craigie (Colonel on half pay) and his somewhat younger wife and 7 children
Any information about Stroul Lodge would be much appreciated

Re: Stroul Lodge, Clynder, Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire
Thanks Hibee - very strange - not sure what was wrong with my googling as I didn't find most of those
The PDF file took forever to download but has a picture and floorplan. I'm assuming the property used to be larger (the sales document talks of "this particular conversion") - in 1851 there were 11 adults and 7 children in residence
Tis a great picture on the sales document - shame they didn't move the car before taking it - ah I can add the "garden flat" from a different link and it's starting to look capable of holding the family & servants

Hi Alan
Many thanks - given the size of the cottage from your ad - the Lodge must have well accommodated the family in 1851

Greetings.
By chance, I too was recently looking for a cottage at Clynder. I found it on this 1860 – 1865 map
The link below will take you to a FIRST EDITION ORDNANCE MAP of Scotland sheet XVI.3
To the left set the zoom in bar at 2 squares above and five below, then >> to look in the lower right of the map at the waters edge. You will see Stroul Lodge - Firth Cottage – Stroul – and Garelock Cottage clearly named.

Greetings Trish.
Was no problem. I've seen copies of dwellings, of interest, before on web sites, and supplied by other researchers with family history copy, but as no credit had been given, was uncertain whence they came.
At the suggested resolution, the maps come up very well, because of the detail they hold about that period. [1850's 1870's] Their colouration is also appealing to my eye.
