Hello friends,
Part of my family research has revealed my Great Grandfather lived at a 'dwelling at Kelburn Street and Knoxland' in Barrhead. I know where Kelburn Street is but cannot find any information or location for Knoxland. Does anyone have any idea where Knoxland was, what type of dwellings were there and who was Knox?
Any information would be appreciated.
Regards,
Dunli

A look at the 1881 census shows an address as Kelburn St Knox Land. I think I'm right in saying that a Mr Knox would have been the proprietor of the house they lived in.dunli wrote:Hello friends,

Scots language dictionaries define a "land" as a type of building often multiple storey although I have seen examples where it simply meant the owner of the actual ground.
In this context the most likely style of building would have been a tenement.

Thank you both for your replies.
It's good to hear ideas shedding some light from a different angle, which gives me greater possibilities. My thoughts were more thinking of an area of land where individual dwellings were situated into sort of smallholdings but maybe that was just a 'romantic' thought.
I appreciate your time and input.

If you look at some old maps of the area you'll get a better idea.
The NLS has some good OS 6 inch maps which show the buildings outlines.
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=13&la ... FFFFFFFFFF
might get you there.
There are 3 different ones: 1896, 1911 & 1938 so depending on when your chap was there....
I suspect it would have been one of the buildings on the eastern side as the ground slopes away on the west and had a Tannery on the site -now shops.
The current houses are a mixture of mid & Post WWII Council houses.

Much appreciated WilmaM.
Before you posted my next step was to have a look at some older maps. You saved me searching for some good maps by providing the link, thanks for that. The maps are very good. My G-Grandfather was recorded in the 1881 census as living there.
I see where you are coming from as to the location. I'll have a look at that in greater detail later on tonight.
Thanks for your time and interest.

Somebody, William Dyer presumably, has taken the trouble to scan old pictures of Barrhead here:

I'm not seeing anything obvious for Kelburn street but gives a flavour of the place.

What treasures you unearthed there WilmaM!
I have seen some of the photographs before but not all. In fact, one of the photos shows houses where my father was born in Springhill, Barrhead, although which one I am not certain. I don't know when the photo was taken. I only have one photograph of anyone on my father's side and I am not even certain who it is, although I presume it to be my Grandfather.
I had a very interesting evening looking at the photos, thank you.
