I am trying to find out where Inglis Glen, Colinton was. I have a Frederick George Harrison born there in 1906. His father was a coachman so was wondering who he worked for. Anyone familiar with this place? He is not there in the census either side.
Thanks
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
It is more likely to be Inglis Green. Is that a possibility from the document that you have with that on it? Inglis Green was between Slateford and Longstone villages, on the northern edge of Colinton Parish, nowadays (since 1920) within the City of Edinburgh.
See:

This shows "Inglisgreen Bleachfield", by what is nowadays Inglis Green Road (a couple of miles from home for me).
It may be worth looking at the Valuation Rolls (1905 is available there) on ScotlandsPeople to see if his house appears there, with him as a tenant. The important piece of information that should be there is the owner of the property. That may lead to finding who his employer was. Many coachmen stayed in a tied property, often over the stable (later garage).
All the best,
AndrewP

Thanks very much Andrew. Yes it could be Green. The R in his parish looks the same l!
Now I know that I should be able to find it in the valuation rolls.
Best wishes

Hi Barbara,
I had a quick peek at the 1905 Valuation Roll, and there is your man Frederick Harrison, in a lodge to Inglis Green House. It seems that the house and lodge owners, the Stevensons were the proprietors of A & J MacNab the Launderers and Dyers across the road from the house.
See (near the end of) the following webpage from the local community council.

Inglis Green House still stands, although alost all of the other buildings around it have changed over the years.
See this map from the 1940s. It shows more detail of the area than the older map that I gave the link for in the post above.

The laundry is consigned to history. A Sainsbury's supermarket stands on the site nowadays.
