Feallan.....
Can anyone shed any light on this name (?word)
It appears to me to be a place name in Coll and it was used in an IGI entry when I was looking up an ancestor. I think I may have found him but have never seen this word before. Is it a place or a word with a meaning? Maybe some of your learned scholars can help me out please?
Many thanks

All I can see is http://dontgohere.nu/oe/as-bt/read.htm? ... 1&hl=fealo which is just a dictionary definition.

I know of no place of that name on Coll, and a quick look at an old (1899) Ordnance Survey map of Coll throws up nothing that looks like that name. It may be a very local place name (a topographical feature, perhaps, or an area - are there no natives of Coll on this forum? ), but without seeing the original entry from which you are quoting it is difficult to help. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) verb spelled thus (feallan, the infinitive form of the verb meaning "fall")), and the meaning of the word in Gaelic - there is such a word in Gaelic - gives no immediate clues without further context. Are you sure that you have transcribed the word/name correctly? Can we even be certain that the original record has the word/name in the correct form or spelling? Clearly here we are at several removes from the original entry, so a reference to that would be helpful, but a scan would be even better ...

Hi Beverley
It may be entirley random if its on the IGI! I've found a place in Fife they know of called Funfermline.
I think I know where they meant...
best wishes

Thanks so much Jim I think this is the most likely answer. The word in the IGI listing (on the FamilySearch website) was definitely "Feallan" but we all know I guess that any misspell is possible in these entries.JimM wrote:There is a Feall bay on Coll.
Could the record be Feall "in" Coll instead of Feallan Coll?
Jim
Strange that I've never seen it before though.

Re: Feallan.....
Long time ago but there's a place of that name on the River Dulnain, Inverness-shire.
