Help Deciphering Birthplace.....
I would appreciate any suggestions for the birthplace of Robert FITTON, living at # 44, occupation Harbour Porter. His wife, Ann, was born at Kilmorich, Argyll.

Hopefully someone else will decipher what I cannot but your quickest way to find out may be by looking at Mary's birth entry as she was born in 1855 and Robert's birthplace should be on that.
It looks like **orrun or *ornun.
Kind regards,
Annette M
It's Wigtonshire - Glenluce.

It's Robert Fitton, not Aitken. Just a wee bit further down the page.

Hi
The first word is ditto to Lanark, so Lanarkshire somewhere, and you probably know that already as its pretty clear ...but after that I wouldn't like to say. You need someoneone more familiar with that part of the county I think.
best wishes

As is so often the case, it's the b****y capital. Can't make anything fit
Have a look at http://www.scotsorigins.com/ where you can search on any part of a name, i.e. you don't need to know the capital .............

Robert FITTON
Thanks to all of you for wonderful suggestions and resources. I wasn't aware I could search for partial names on Scotsorigins and the Gazeteer of British Placenames is a wonderful, new to me, resource.
Wee Mary FITTON was born in 1855, but her birth was not registered until 1856 so we miss out on all of the lovely details that might have appeared on an 1855 registration.
Robert FITTON usually just has England listed as his birthplace on a census so the ditto marks are probably an error?
Kind Regards,
Laura

Hello Laura
My guess is that Robert was born in Thornham Lancashire
You can Imagine the census taker hearing this as "Thornum"
IGI has a record of Robert Fitton born in 1829 in Thornham... this seems to be the one.
