Hello Bob,
the Union bridge was the first suspension bridge in Britain (1820), the longest surviving one in the world, and cost £7000 instead of £20,000 for a masonry one. True Scots thrift.
The original request did not request that it had to be known the world over, but this bridge deserves to be. It has been mentioned as a candidate for a World Heritage structure.
Nobody going to mention the Skye bridge?!
Regards,
John

The Forth Bridge was the first structure of it's kind to be built of steel, built to support a deadweight of 6,244 tons. That took 52,000 tons of top quality steel. The foundations were built of over 21, 000 tons of Portland cement and 740,000 cubic feet of Aberdeen granite. Over 52 men lost their lives over the nine years of construction. It was and remains an engineering marvel. A wonder of the world. Engineers of the day said it couldn't be done. It has been said that for Victorian Britain it was the equivalent of the 20th century moon landing programme. Now that's a BRIDGE!

A few years ago, as a prize for a charity raffle at the annual dinner of an engineering institution which has to remain nameless, I turned up with a Forth Bridge rivet, - they fall off regularly, - very nicely encapsulated in clear plastic, imagining that, in the centenary year it would be a much more interesting raffle prize than the customary bottle of malt whisky (and it cost a lot more!). The disappointment on the face of the holder of the winning ticket had to be seen to be believed
