Re Sharp's Lane > Warp Lane
Hi Helen and Jim,
Jim, i hope you won't mind me giving this?
Helen, if you want to see where Sharp's Lane was then go to -
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... plans.html
--
select Glasgow [1892-4]
select Centre Square
select VI.10.13 (3rd up & 3rd from left)
Sharp's Lane is at top right corner
(it's between a Hope St & Jamieson's Lane)
--
Alas not there today - that area of Argyle Street (previously named Main St) was re-developed with the building of the Kingston Bridge.
But some conflicts as to when it vanished.
Warp Lane is in a street map index of 1993 - missing 1996. But a 2000 map index has it! Nowadays none mention it.
If you do a search for Cheapside St (select option 1) at
http://www.uk.map24.com/ or http://www.mapquest.co.uk/
it will give you an idea of how much the area has been altered.

Being a SHARP with Glasgow Environs roots, does any one have knowledge of the origin of the name SHARP'S LANE ?
Were the Paisley merchant Sharp's ever in business there too ?

Unlikely to be "Granville Sharp Pattison" Alan, but he's worth a Google.

Re: Sharps Lane Glasgow.....
Greetings Johnnie.
Only have two Granville SHARP'S in my list of some 900. Son of John SHARP and Janet McEWING 1851 and marriage of a Granville to a Jessy REDPATH 1845. No links that I'm aware of.
Of more interest would be the James SHARPS 1730's - 1840's. Small lane, central Glasgow, pre the 1800's rapid expansion would be most probable to my mind for a SHARP.
Thanks for your reply.

Ya wee angel Dannyboy!!! What a cracking piccie! My 3x great grandmother (and probably 2x great grandfather when he was home from sea) lived there c1869-73 - number 16 . I have one pic of it, but your one's better! Thanks so much!
I have a couple of maps of it saved if anyone wants a copy. You can prob find them online by now but it took me ages and a trip to the Mitchell to find where it was - only to find it was practically behind where I was standing!
