Edinburgh - advice please.....
I've been tracing my family tree and I have found that I am descended from Hittons and Meins in Edinburgh.
They seem to have married and been christened in 'Edinburgh Parish Church'
Could anyone tell me which church that would be and where in Edinburgh it is located.
Many thanks
Jos

Hi Jos,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
Edinburgh Parish Church is an old name for what is now known as St Giles Cathedral in the High Street in Edinburgh.

Old Edinburgh developed round the church and the Tolbooth was just down the road from it
The oldest part of the town grew up along the Royal Mile which stretches between Holyrood Palace and the Castle perched up on the crags.
I worked in Edinburgh nearly 50 years ago and describing it has made me homesick!!!
Wasn't a beautiful place in the 1700s though!

Hi Russell, you´d not be forgetting Jenny Geddes in her parish kirk would you?
See: http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/people/ ... st147.html
Just about the only woman´s name I still remember from Scottish history, though there was a Mary I recall. and perhaps a Flora?
Thrall, whose memory is fast on the wane.

Hi Thrall
Apparently as an infant my favourite lullaby was'Flora McDonald's Lament'
If you remember 1 Mary you must remember that she had 4 Marys
'
Yestre'en the Queen had four Marys
This nicht there'l be but three
There was Mary Beaton and Mary Smeaton
And Mary Carmichael and me'.
Turbulent times in the Kirk and out and to think some of my relatives lived through it!
TalkingScot has triggered lots of memories in me and, no doubt, is doing the same for you. Good for the long term recall.

The Four Marys
There's still a pub in Linlithgow named after The Four Marys!
