Areas in Dunfermline circa 1819 - 1841.....

Does anyone know if Halbeath and Baldridgeburn were / are areas in Dunfermline ? Please explain how these 3 places might relate to one another. I'm trying to pinpoint my gggrandmother's place of birth in 1819. She does not show up on the OPR records. However, she has siblings one born 1816 and one 1820 who give Halbeath, Fife as their places of birth on later censuses. Their births are not recorded on OPR either. The 1841 census has her, Agnes Reekie and her parents at Baldridgeburn Dunfermline. Is that a street ( as I previously thought) or an area in the Parish of Dunfermline ? Would it be close to Halbeath and how close ? I found a record that stated her father, John Reekie was a schoolteacher in 1838 in/at Baldridgeburn. I would really appreciate a clarification ! Thanks

Baldridgeburn is today an area just to the west of the centre of Dunfermline (a city) - it was probably a separate village at one time, not sure. Halbeath is on the outskirts of modern-day Dunfermline to the east. In days gone it would have been a separate village. Dunfermline PArish covered a large area of both the city of Dunfermline and the surrounding area taking in farmlands, collieries, many surrounding villages and river ports on the Firth of Forth. It was proabably the largest Parish if Fife population-wise (- it certainly feels like it when wading through the census films!)

The old-maps web site (www.old-maps.co.uk) is "down" just now, but once it is up again, a look there would help clarify the relative positions of the respective areas. Baldridgeburn is about 3 and a half miles from Halbeath.

Hi Lesley & Tracey:

Thanks for the info. I have a better idea now on where and what these places were/ are. My next step I think, would be to see if my local FHC has any parish records for Halbeath. I've been looking for ages for her place and date of birth and feel that I'm getting closer. I would guess that not all small villages BMDs were recorded in the OPR of GRO ? The OPR records for Halbeath and Baldridgeburn areas would come under Dunfermline Parish in Fife. (OPR 424)
