Kilbarchan's TS Event.

Post by Russell » Wed Jul 11, 2007 1:18 pm

Hi everybody

Following on from the successful Irish Seminar in Glasgow we at TS wondered if a similar, more broadly based event would be of interest in Kilbarchan which is only a dozen or so miles from Glasgow so is fairly near transport links.

I have booked provisional dates of Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October 2007 although the Sunday is optional.

Topics
AnneM has agreed to talk about Legal issues and I hope to twist DavidWW’s arm to volunteer his services.
Suggestions for specific topics would be welcome and even if we can’t accommodate some of them this time it would give ideas for future events.

Venue
Kilbarchan is a Conservation weavers village so there is a lot of local history and places like the Weavers Cottage (a National Trust for Scotland cottage) to explore if folk wanted to extend from a one day event to a weekend and do field trips.
Surprisingly, the village has no hotel or B&B services but there are other places fairly local. I will find out more about them and post them up later if there is a need for this.
Glasgow Airport is only 10 minutes drive away. The nearest railway station is Johnstone (again 10 minutes away) but there is a bus link to Kilbarchan from there.
To see more about the venue go to: http://www.kipcokil.com/

Cost
To make the event viable I would need to have a minimum of 20 folk attending but the premises take up to 60 so space is not a problem. My initial thoughts about cost were £10.00 for a day. Lunches could be provided for an additional £5.00.
Tentative Structure
Saturday 13th October
9.30 am registration
10.00 Introduction
10.30 Speaker followed by questions
11.30 Coffee
12.00 Topic groups
1.00 pm Lunch
2.15 Speaker + questions
3.15 Coffee
3.30 Topic groups
4.30 Finish

I have probably missed out half the things folks would like to ask so feel free to PM or e-mail me with questions.

Hi Russell,

Although I was a legal secretary at one time in my life, I don't think I'd qualify as a legal expert...I think you meant to write AnneM
:)
Sounds like a good event you have planned and I'm sorry I'll have to miss it this time around.

Regards,
Anne H

Russell

I'll put the date in my diary. Haven't been around much on TS lately due to work commitments, but hope to be back more regularly soon.

Let me know if I can help you with anything, since I'm only 3 miles away!

Cheers

Law Seminar

I've voted but not for history and structure as I did that as part of my degree, in fact I'm sure the relevant textbook is what is stopping my bed from wobbling :D

Can't wait whatever is decided.

Hi Folks
Just to add a little more info about the Seminar/Event.
The venue is relatively accessible for those with mobility problems. The conference room is upstairs, but there is a Stannah chair lift available. You have been warned ! The loos are downstairs and the chair lift is slow.

There is a computer suite (12 PCs) available with broadband Internet access. I have still to discover if there is a local wireless node for the laptop folks. Enquiries are on-going!

The nearest railway station is Johnstone – about three miles away. Glasgow Airport is only a few minutes away by car but there is no direct bus link to Kilbarchan. There is a regular bus route from Glasgow right into the village which passes the door of the venue.
If people are stuck for transport PM me and perhaps something can be worked out say from Johnstone railway station or Glasgow Airport.

More information about the village is to be found at
http://www.kilbarchan.info.
This website has only just gone on line.

Currently I have twisted arms and booked DavidWW to speak on General Scottish Archive sources and AnneM appears to have a very close run race between Wills and Inheritance and Land Holdings and Deeds. Currently the latter is leading by a very short head so if you have a preference get your vote in at
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9655
Or you could be beaten at the post.

If anyone wants to show off their tree on a computer I would need advance warning about your preferred software as I won’t have Administrator privileges on the computer to load a programme on the day.

So far no-one has made suggestions for any other activities/topics they would like to address on the day. If you have ideas for anything else you would like to have included please feel free to PM me.
