Donaldson.....
Hi everyone, I have only just found this site, and I am hoping someone can help me. My g.g.g. grandfather Robert Donaldson was born in Bathgate in 1806 I know his father my( g.g.g.g. grandfather ) was James, his mother was Janet Marshall but can't find a marriage for them, I know they may not have married, but without something else to go on I am stuck. I got all the information to date from Scotlands People site, but nothing on this, can anyone help, or at least tell me where I might find something more, I have also looked on Scottish Origins for a marriage without any luck. Thanks Julie.

Hi Julie
May I give you a warm welcome to TalkingScot
I didn't find a marriage for James Donaldson and Janet Marshall either.
Did wonder though, if you already had the following information from the International Genealogical Index at Family Search.

JEAN DONALDSON Christening: 06 JAN 1805 Bathgate, West Lotthian
ROBERT DONALDSON Christening: 16 NOV 1806 Bathgate, West Lothian
THOMAS DONALDSON Christening: 21 OCT 1798 Bathgate, West Lothian
THOMAS DONALDSON Christening: 23 JAN 1803 Bathgate, West Lothian
Best wishes

Nothing positive on James and Janet and I couldn't find them in Bathgate in 1841.
I did find Robert though on FREECEN - http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl although you may have this.

re-Donaldson
Thanks for the quick replies, Catriona- the only one I recognise is Robert I did have those birth details, the others are not in any records I have found. Annette- Robert sounds right by age, Margaret I had at a couple of years older , but you know these old records are sometimes a bit off. The children I don't have, but I only got back to the 1861 census so by then they could have left home? could you tell me how to access the 1851, 1841 census if possible. Thanks Julie.

Freecen has most of West Lothian in 1841 but nothing in 1851. Hopefully (as ever) it will be on SP soon.
Remember the ages are rounded down to the nearest 5, if you are aged over 15 years, in 1841.

Re:Donaldson - 1851
Hi Julie,
To add to Annette's 1841, here's the family in 1851 - which should soon be online at ScotlandsPeople.
Details below are from an excellent census CD issued by the West Lothian FHS; http://www.wlfhs.org.uk/
You mention that you thought Margaret was a wee bit older than her 25yrs in 1841.
The ages in 1841 should've been "rounded down". Click on Census at the top of the TS page for an explanation.
[Annette's explained!]

1851 cens 662 (585) Ed4 p39 (Bathgate)

James DONALDSON, son, 13, scholar, b Bathgate, WLN

re-Donaldson
Thanks once again for the quick replies, Jack- thanks so much for that info, Mary was not on 1861 census, she had probably married by then and left home, another daughter appears on the 1861, Jessie aged 9yrs. It is Archibald (g.g. grandfather) that I followed on my tree, he moved to Sunderland in North East England, followed by his son James , then his son James my grandfather who married my nana Mary Robson, who is still in Sunderland, and will be 104yrs old in May. Thanks Julie.

Mary Donaldson
Hi Julie,
Firstly my warmest regards to your nana Mary - she is doing well ; not many folk around at near 104yrs!
Makes me feel quite a youngster.
--
All i've written here is just pure speculation...whether it's true is another matter!
I'm wondering if the reason that Mary DONALDSON is missing in 1861 is because she has died a young woman?
You'd need to of course first check the 1857 marriage to see if she IS your Margaret.
Near next door to the DONALDSONs [schedule 150] in 1851 is an Andrew HILL.
These other mentions below of an Andrew HILL might be the same person, but on the other hand they might not be!
