Agnes and Jane

Wow Annette
That is such a wealth of information on those poor relief applications.
Thank you so much for transcribing them - that was no small feat, and you can be sure that it is much appreciated.

There is a lot of tidbits to give some insights. I suppose you can never really get the full picture, but it sure is amazing that we can find so much so many years later.

After reading your post, I looked at the virtual Mitchell website and actually found a photo of 21 Sydney Street where Jane Currie McGoff lived when applying for poor relief!

It was also interesting to see from Agnes' application that she did know of Jessie and her whereabouts, at least later in her life.

I looked again at certificates that I have. Jessie's birth certificate is a normal one - nothing on it anywhere about illegitemacy. It's an extract from GROS, the kind they print on official paper with a stamp. She was born 21 Sept 1879, reported by Agnes, signed with an X, named Janet Jeffrey McDonald, after John McDonald's mother Janet Jeffrey.

My mother and I were wondering if Agnes didn't have some sort of post partum depression.

Also, I must mention that I looked again at Jessie's marriage cert to Wm Christie, 9 March 1899. It doesn't say that either Agnes McGoff nor John McDonald is deceased. Wm Christie's mother was deceased, so the registrar did ask, I would think. So maybe when I search for John McDonald's death, I should extend it to 1906, if indeed she did know he was dead then.

I can see that this is going to keep me busy for quite a while.
Thank you again for all of your help.

John McDonald's Parents

Post by winslowsmom » Fri Jul 15, 2005 5:15 am

Hello again

I was looking further at old certs and was reminded that the parents of John McDonald both died, at different times, in the poorhouse or poorhouse hospital. Now that I understand the information that might be there, I am hoping that you might be able to take a look at these records the next time you have extra time and/or energy at the Mitchell.

WILLIAM MCDONALD died 5 January 1899 at the Barnhill Poorhouse.

JANET JEFFREY died 21 July 1904 at the Stobhill Hospital. I beleive that this was the poorhouse hospital.

Maybe one of their poor relief applications will say what son JOHN MCDONALD was up to.

Did I hear someone say somewhere that the Mitchell was going to be closed for a while though?
