Charles O#Donnell / Catherine Rush
Drew,
I haven't forgotten your brick wall but I'm beginning to think those I asked for help have forgotten! all I managed to find out is that yes, Rush(e) would not be a common name there at all but if you throw a stone you'll hit an O'Donnell. I have word of an O'donnell clan who meet there every now and again and I'm hoping to get the name of someone there who might be able to help. In the meantime would the local family history centre be any help? Be warned - they can be a tourist trap - charging 100 euro or so for searching - but if you're desperate, it might be worth it. Any idea at all of where in Donegal they came from?

Drew. I can only see 6 heads of households in Griffiths Valuation for the surname Rush/e in Donegal.
Using http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... lMain.html
to place the parishes and townlands.
James Rush Donaghmore Raws Upper
Willliam Rush Donaghmore Raws Lower
William Rush Raphoe Raphoe Townparks
Mrs Rush Urney Alt Upper
John Rush (snr) Urney Alt Upper
John Rush (Jnr) urney Alt Upper
Mrs Rush is renting from John Jnr.
Now on the same page as the entry for James Rush, but in the townland of Tievebrack, the first entry is for a Charles O'Donnell. (if yours is still alive in 1858). There are no other Charles ODonnells in the Parishes of Donaghmore, Urney or Raphoe. (though I'll check nearby Clonleigh and others and get back to you if there any hits)
Will send you page if you would like to see it.

Drew,
I hope that message from Ian is good news for you. Will still pursue my friends in Donegal to give you a dig out.
I found something yesterday which I'm hoping will turn into good news for me regarding the Mitchells of Banchory Ternan. I found an ironmongers shop called Mitchells on the High St where they used to live. I know the Mitchell name is very common but because it's High St and Peter's father was an ironmonger's porter in Aberdeen and Peter was a general merchant, I'm hoping. Also found a hotel called the Douglas Arms on the same street and Douglas was the name of Peter's youngest son. I'm really clutching at straws now!
Any way I have e-mailed an ANESFHS member who lives in Banchory to see if there are still Mitchells there (or is it just a name over a door) and perhaps to get a name of someone to write to. Fingers Crossed

Thanks for your assistance and yes I think my Charles would be alive in 1858. Daughters Bridget and Catherine were born around 1856.
Ian if you could send the page it would be great email macdhaibhidh@blueyonder.co.uk

Drew - we could be on to something here with the second Alfred Mitchell. 'My' Alfred was born in 1883 which would make him exactly 64 in 1947. I had done some looking and hadn't found one that matched that closely. I'll go back into my previous searches and check it. In the meantime does that cetificate give parents names - if they are Peter Mitchell and Margaret McLean, I owe you!!!!

Sorry Drew,
Didn't mean for YOU to check parents' names - I'm going to do that now. I should really read over what I type - that's the second time lately I have put something daft in an e-mail! Can onlyplead excitement today.

Just checked Drew, and he's a different Alfred. Aw well. Thanks for trying and I owe you a few credits at least. Next time you have a large search to do, let me know and I will gladly return the compliment.
Regards and thanks again,
Tish

Returning the Compliment
Hi Trish
You already have - with your assistance with my O'Donnell's and I am sure you will help someone else after all that's why we are members of this great site.
I assume that Walter in Kintore was the wrong age.
They were the only ones to turn up in the deaths but it is possible that they both died after 1954 and therefore would not be listed.
I would suggest that you ask anyone visiting the GRO in Edinburgh in person to have a look for you.

Hi Drew,
Yes your Walter was the wrong age. In the meantime I wrote to an ANESFHS member in Banchory and while she doesn't know if there are any Mitchells still at the shop, she got me the telephone number and also has an old advertisement for the shop. So at least that's progress.
As to your Donegal search. I spoke to someone from Donegal today, who, while they know little about family history, said that Rushe is uncommon EXCEPT in the Gweedore area of the county where he knows of a few families. This might help to narrow your field.
My other contact in Donegal has faxed information for you to my office but I haven't been there all week to get it. Apparently she spoke to someone in the ancestry group who says if you get in touch with them with your ifnormation they will tell you what they can do and give you a quote before they start. She has also included contact details for some person called O'Donnell who is involved with the clan gathering. I hope to get this to you tomorrow night.
Regards,
Tish
